Hysterectomy after gastric bypass

Has anyone here had a hysterectomy after gastric bypass?  I had my bypass in January 2007.  I will be having a hysterectomy sometime this month and was wondering if there is anything I should know beforehand.  I plan on discussing it with my surgeon, just wanted some input from those who have been there already.  I guess I'm just wondering if there are more complication risks after having the bypass?  I know I'll have to deal with some weight gain but I'm confident that I know how to handle that when the time comes.

Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Why do you expect weight gain? Oh, because of the lack of exercise at first. I guess you will have to build back up to your current exercise program.

Good luck with the operation.

I had my GB in Jan 07 and had my hysterectomy March of 08.  No complications at all.  In fact at the same time I also had a panni(removed 16lbs abdominal skin) and a hernia repair and my appendix taken out.  I didnt gain any weight either..In fact I continued to lose. With all those procedures at once I have to admit I was miserable for awhile, but it wasnt unbearable and it was sooo worth it.  Make sure they get u on a good hormone tho cause the hot flashes are hell!  And I havent had a good nights sleep since! But those are common problems with menapause with or without gastric bypass.  Good luck, and dont worry.  It'll be fine!

I had a hysterectomy 2 years after my RNY. Everything went fine. I had to have a bowel repair and bladder as well. I wanted to have to skin removed at the same time and my insurance company would not pay for it. They said they would pay to have to skin removed by to sew me up was going to cost me 3,000 out of pocket. Well didn't have that, which I found was totally rediculous. They called it cosmetic from that point on. I couldn't wait to fight them on it either cause my uterus was hanging out for goodness sake! What gives them the right, Now that I have had a prolapse I am at risk still cause I have that skin hanging which is putting pressure there. Well I did gain weight which I contribute to Polycystic Ovarian disease reaking havoc on my body once again. I haven't gained all my weight but some. More like about 40 pounds but still down a hundred which I am not okay with but still better than before. I lost alot of restriction. I also believe it has to do with stress and lack of exercise. My mom was sick with cancer for 18 months and recently passed away. I took care of her alot but it also took time away from me. I miss her terribly. Since she has passed I have eaten very little and have lost some weight. I can tell I have although my scale needs a new battery so I have yet to weigh myself. One of the reasons I know this is since I haven't been eating alot, I have felt that I have regained more restriction, so there is something to say about the 5 day pouch test. So if you end up with issues do that. I hope you don't have any issues what so ever. I think honestly I had a harder time with my hysterectomy than I did with my RNY but I had all those repairs. I know people who had a much easier time. The repairs were the worst. Best of luck to you! Also check out Hystersisters.com. Its a another support site.

I had a complete hysterectomy and 40 lymph nodes removed, due to uterine cancer, 4 years after open RNY and a full abdominoplasty.

My surgeon/oncologist was informed, of course, of both surgeries. Her only concern was the potential for encountering scar tissue and abdominal adhesions. To preserve my truly beautiful TT, she wanted to try to do the procedure laproscopically. Of course, for any lap procedure, the surgeon always reserves the the right to revert to an open procedure.

My surgery took a bit longer than expected primarily because my belly didn't want to inflate with the gas that is used for that purpose--it was just too tight! (yippee).  I have a complete transcript of the procedure and it's really quite funny to read the anesthesiologists comments about trying to inflate me! The bad side effect for me was that there was a whol lot of gas that took a very long time to completely dissipate from my body and that hurt far, far worse than the surgery itself!

I did gain some weight after this surgery but I cannot blame it on the change in body chemistry but rather my habits getting a bit lazy. (I take no hormones, nor have I ever.) Over the next couple of years I gained 20# in a yo-yo fashion. I've been fighting them hard and have lost 13 in the last several months.

That's my story. Wishing you well.
