sodium in protein shakes

My friend online ask me to check the sodium content on the protein shake I am drinking. I check it was 280mg She said this could be the culprit of my weight gain. I am holding water. Even though I take 40 mg of fursomide a day. My weight goes up and down. I struggle staying in onederland because of this. I don't use table salt at all. I drink water all day long as well. So anyone else think the protein shakes cause the water retention from the sodium. So if i am drinking 2 or 3 a day that is alot of sodium isn't it/?

I think it depends on what your MD set as a limit for you. The average 2000 cal. meal plan with no sodium restriction should be about 2100-2200 grams per day. The sodium restricted diet (no added salt or low sodium foods) could be as low as 1600 grams per day, but averages about 1800 grams. If I were you, I'd use the tracker and see what your total food intake for the day adds up to. Yes, 280 grams is nothing to sniff at, especially if you drink 2-3 each day. Bottom line? I would speak to the surgeon and NUT for specific guidelines.

I would like to ask for what diagnosis do you take the lasix? If it is for something cardiac related ie CHF, then yes, perhaps the sodium content in the shakes in addition to your other intake might be causing you to retain fluid. What is your total sodium intake for a day?

One scoop of Isopure Creamy Vanilla has 160 mg sodium.

It's very possible it is contributing. Are you using protein powder and making your own or store bought premade shakes?

They are the premade ones in 11 oz carton by EAS with 17 gms of protein. I don't care for the taste of the powders. I have tried several.

I am right there with you. I don't like like the taste of powders either. No matter what I do to make it less yucky. :) but..the ones you are drinking do have alot of sodium and is probably the culprit. You can try other premade ones with less sodium.
I drink Atkins Advantage premade ones from walmart. They only have 180mg of sodium. I really like the taste of them. Usually cold, but use the vanilla and chocolate ones in my coffee and cocoa some mornings.
