I know I should remember what I can and can't take, but i haven't been sick since surgery. So can I still take Nyquil?  I had RNY 5/13 have been feeling great, I just started with a sore throat last night and it is getting worse throughout the day.  If no Nyquil, and other suggestions?

Thanks,
Sherri

You can.

However, keep in mind the following two things:

1) Nyquil has sugar in it.  If you are an easy dumper, it might be too much.
2) Nyquil has alochol in it.  If you are an easy drunk after RNY (and some have a VERY low tolerance), then it may be too much.

But it's not an NSAID, it's not time-release, and it won't kill you to take it.  Just keep those two things in mind if you try it.

Thanks Andrea... I was watching this post because I had the same question and I was just going to swing by the store! I haven't tried any sugar, haven't tried any alcohol so I will go read some labels at the store and see if there is anything else to help my sore throat and get me to sleep!

Thanks OP for posting this! We were thinking the same thing at the same time. This board rocks!

Look for 'Diabetic Tussin' -- might still have some alcohol, but it's sugar free.

A kids version, if you can find it, would be alcohol free.

THAT low? Really? Nyquil is 10 per cent alcohol by volume, and a dose is, what, 1 ounce? Wow, some of y'all really are cheap dates! (*grin*)

The combo of the meds of OLD nyquil and the alcohol?  Puts me on my ass in 10 minutes flat.

I think it's the combo, rather than just the alkeyhawl.

That's what I LIKE about Nyquil, LOL! I always say "Take your Nyquil WHERE you want to sleep."

You should call your surgeon's nurse. But my surgeon says to take nothing with NSAIDs.
This web site says Nyquil doesn't have NSAIDS.

Be careful, some Excedrin products do contain aspirin.  Read carefully and ask the pharmacy.
