Ummm... why on earth do you think popcorn would shred a pouch??  Not all surgeons have the same school of thought on soda (diet of course) or straws... air in, air out - up or down - no bursting the seams...

I think what Judi was saying is that if she is screwing with fate this early our she NEDDS food addiction counseling...  I do eat things some RNYrs would shudder at but I dod not eat them at 7 weeks out!!

Different strokes I guess... I did'nt either. Yes, every surgeon is def different. It's not the soda that's the problem, it's the carbonation that can stretch the pouch. ever cut your mouth on a sharp edge of a kernal of popcorn? imagine hundreds of those in your pouch, again, why tempt fate.... Everyone must do what works for them. She has eaten cotton candy once since surgery... does that constitute an addiction?... At what point post-op does it go from NOT being ok at 7 weeks to being OK at xx number of months / years post-op??? How can you say she has a food addiction at 7 weeks post op and needs counseling, but you eating things that RNY'ers would "Shudder At" don't?

OH is being weird I just got your reply today!!  Well what I mean is the fact that she could not control her desire to have pure sugar so early out...  It is more about being able to control your desires than the food itself.  KWIM?

I didn't have the RNY, but my mom did. I agree with what Dan said. No one is perfect. We are all human. Beating someone up about something is not the right track to take. I would kindly advise her NOT to eat anything with sugar. Not because of the possiblity of dumping, but because it could and will probably slow the weight loss. Then again once the weight is off, it could put it back on.

With the type of surgery that I had, there is no dumping when I eat something with sugar. Do I, NO. I don't want to slow my weight loss. At Thanksgiving, a friend of mine made a no bake pumpkin pie. I asked her to make one that was sugar free because I knew that I would be eating more carbs that I have been since surgery on that day and didn't want to add something with sugar into that mix. I also make a sugar free no white flour chocolate cake. I used Splenda instead of sugar and unsweetened chocolate instead of some with sugar.

Lisa, any type of WLS is a tool that we use to make changes in our eating habits. You can be successful, but you have to eliminate the things that can and will stop your loss and possibly put it back on. You slipped, that's normal. I've slipped. I'm not going to bash you about it. Just know that in the future the decisions you make on what you put in your mouth have repurcussions. Just because you don't dump, doesn't mean you should eat it. You may not dump now, but there is always the possiblity of it happening later on, especially if you eat more than you did before. Trust me when I say that dumping is NOT fun. I've seen it happen to my mom multiple times. She just doesn't listen to me when I tell her not to eat sugar filled foods. I think a lot of that has to do with me being her daughter. However, I will keep trying.

Best of Luck

Stephanie

edited to include: My mom is 5 years post-op and has kept all but the last 20 pounds off. She still dumps and still tempts fate by eating things with sugar in them. Not all the time, but often enough that it's hard for me to watch.

I am almost a year out and have never dumped.  It is still a little early for you to be trying something like that.  I try things out every once in awhile like a cookie or a couple of bites of cake.  Good luck on your journey.

Oh, I am so thankful that you have shared with me that you, too, have also never dumped... I thought I was just weird,,,In fact, I wondered if my surgeon really did the surgery on me after all, HA/HA!!!  Thank you so much for sharing. Lisa

there are some RNYers that do not have any problems with sugar (blessing or curse, you decide).  I am one of them.  Things made with sugar substitutes make me sick at my stomach.  Now, I haven't eaten an entire bag of cotton candy, but I have had a couple of bites.  I also sweeten my tea with sugar, eat an occasional piece of candy, etc.  Gasp, I even had a very thin slice of chocolate pie at Thanksgiving.  Last night I had a marshmallow that had been dipped in white chocolate and rolled in crushed peppermint.   Some may say that I am wrong for doing that, but I didn't have this surgery to be a freak and never enjoy eating again.  Everything in moderation!

Thank you soooo much for really answering my  QUESTION! I have always loved sweets, and I just did not want to have to deprive myself from ever being able to taste chocolate, etc ever again... without the huge fear of 'dumping'... I do not plan on eating chocolate, cotton candy, cookies, ice cream, etc on a regular basis... but, I would love to be able to taste a bite of something on a special occassion (like an Annual Christmas Parade)... I am thankful that you shared your personal thoughts in such a positive way with me... God Bless YOU!

For what it's worth, I also have been able to tolerate just about everything that I have thus far stuck in my mouth, but I would never, ever venture to eat cotton candy, not now, and certainly not at 7 weeks post-op.
I guess that it could be considered a blessing, or a curse, that you can eat sugar, depending on how you opt to look at it.
I like the fact that, for me, this is about moderation and making "good choices".
But...on the flip side of the coin, it could be evil for me, very evil.
I hope that for the rest of my life, this journey will be about "moderation".  I hope that it never leads me back to the deep, dark hole that I was once in, the hole that for years I struggled to get out of.
Be very careful.  Cotton Candy is pure sugar.  I've not had pure sugar, and certainly not in that volume.  It would scare me to death if I was able to do that with that much ease.
