Miralax Question

OK, so we all have problems with constipation post wls.  I get that.  And different things work for different ones of us.  I recently discovered Miralax, which to my amazement, worked for me right from the start.  I've been using it for about 5 days now with excellent results...except for one tiny problem....

I'm now retaining fluid big time.

I mean, prior to Miralax, with my 89 pound weight loss to date, my rings were sliding off my fingers and my watch was swinging around on my wrist.  NOW: I wake up with water bags around my eyes, my rings are stuck on my fingers and my watch is in a fixed position.  Additionally, my ankles are noticable swollen - and, (drumroll please) I've gained 3 pounds.

I CAN NOT have this.  I will have to stop the Miralax unless you guys who have experience with it tell me it's short lived and will pass.  Anybody experience this???  Any advice??  Thanks so much for taking the time!  connie

I don't know what to tell you, Connie. I haven't noticed that problem with Miralax. But here is some info from a website:

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using MiraLax.

  • Side effects may include:
    Bloating, cramps, gas, nausea

High doses may cause diarrhea and excessive frequency.

Why should MiraLax not be prescribed?

Do not take MiraLax if there's any chance that you have a bowel obstruction. Symptoms suggesting an obstruction include abdominal pain or distention, nausea, and vomiting.

Also avoid MiraLax if you are allergic to the active ingredient, polyethylene glycol.

Interesting.  And I couldn't find this problem listed in the side effects for the drug.  I did find one lady on another website who said she gained 5 pounds with it, but she had MS.  Don't know how that translates to my situation - except that it seems it can cause fluid retention.  Thanks so much for trying and I am so glad you don't have this problem!  connie

Is it possible that your water retention is not related to the Miralax?  I would check with PCP.  Good luck.  Maryjo

I used it daily and haven't had that problem. Are you absolutely sure it's the Miralax?

Have you tried Magnesium Oxide? I've dropped the Miralax down to about 2-3 times a week but have been taking 400mg Mag. Ox. twice a day. I've been going regularly every day.

No, I am not absolutely sure it was the Miralax, and now, more than 2 weeks into usage of it, I don't seem to have any more fluid retention.  Others have mentioned the Mag Oxide, and I think I will try it to see what happens.  Thanks so much for all the suggestions and concern!  I really appreciate it!  Merry Christmas!  connie
