Dr. Inman did not do my Sleeve. Dr. Cacucci  did the Sleeve then after I lost 100 should would do the RNY. But she wanted to see how far I could go with the sleeve. She thought that I could just get by with the Sleeve. But I lost 150 pounds in one year. I went to a DS dinner this past Monday it was at Zing. I think your name came up some how. I met with Brok on here that how I found out about the DS. Anthem is my insurance they came out with a new thing couple months ago. If you lose less than 30%-50% in 2 years  you can be approve again. My 2 years will be up in Jan

On the journey to losing weight, your friends & family will be the first people to try to knock you off. They do this not out spite, but out of being convicted and knowing they should do the same. It's easier to put someone down for doing the right thing, than for them to actually do it. So at your next family re-union or wherever you are eat your chicken and broccoli and smile when they make jokes about you, they are jealous!

OK, ALL TOGETHER NOW!!

The best weight loss surgery if the one that is BEST for you and your lifestyle, eating habit and what foods you like and dislike.

Shall we try it again jut to be sure we all have it right.

The best wls out there is the one that is BEST for you based on your lifestyle, eating habits and food likes.

Do you think we can all agree on this at least ?

All of the "facts" and figures you find to support DS, I and many others can find to dispute it so what's your point? I can find just as much published data showing that today is Tuesday Nov, 17 if I were so inclined. You all know that. You ca find "facts" to support  ANY argument.  DUH.  Just because you shove a "study" done by a biased party does not truth it make.

I was just wondering...when you go to your surgeon for your first visit, do you tell him or her that you have absolutely no intention of following the health care's team regarding vitamin supplements? Do you tell this to your RD too? I was wondering. Do you get your surgery and thumb your nose at the team of people whose hands you have just put your life into ? Wondering how that works?

I will trust my RD about vitamins and I will gladly tell you why. My RD had a degree in nutritional therapy and she holds a license to practice in this province, I don't know how it works in the US but here she/he is a health care professional. She is accountable for all of her dietary prescriptions and advice. She can be sued for giving damaging advice just as a nurse or a doctor.

The ladies on line who dispense nutritional advice don't know a thing about you. I don't know if they have a degree and I am pretty sure they don't have a license or they would not be doing it on line. I have no doubt these women that you talk about are indeed meaning to cause no harm and are only trying to help. I am not saying anything about their character or trying to disrespect them in any way.I don't even know them.

But. god forbid you get bad advice and have a deadly consequence as a result of following their advice, What excuse do you have and who is responsible? YOU are. If you take advice from someone on line without knowing their qualifications, you have no one to blame but yourself. I am not a RD and am not a nutritionist , I leave that to the experts.

How about...the BEST wls is the one which has been proven through research (and publication of that research in peer-reviewed medical journals) to help the patient lose the weight necessary to no longer be dying from morbid obesity and to maintain that weight loss...NOT by consulting your grocery list.

Moving right along to your next question...my surgeon is a big enough boy that I don't have to hold his hand and worry about hurting his feelings.  I say something like, "You've recommended 50,000 IU of Vit D3 three times a week.  I did that and my D was still low.  So, based on some other information, I increased it to 50,000 per day and according to the latest labs, the D is moving up.  Do you think I should stay at this level or add in a second capsule a couple of times a week?"

The man wears a bow tie...he can handle the questions!  LOL

What do you have against my life, my choice. I, for one, do not like fats and greasy foods (never have). I don't think gobs of either fat or grease makes food taste better, I use a pat of butter on my boiled potato and maybe a smudge of sour cream. Sorry your DS food lifestyle would not be for me. I want a wls that I can live with not one that you think is wonderful. I want a lifestyle that I can eel free to feed my grandchildren exactly  what I eat without having to tell them Now this is what I eat but not you.

Well at least you are having an open discussion with you surgeon and if you have the lab values, I'm sure he can have an open dialog with you,  If I were having issues with abnormal lab values believe me I'd be on the phone to my RD and would not stop till I had all of the answers I needed. So far so good, I will return for more blood work in March.

Again, using a grocery shopping list to determine which wls to have is borderline nuts.

Most anyone having wls is MORBIDLY obese...that is, they are DYING from obesity.  You don't go by the grocery list...you go by which surgery is most likely to help you NOT be in the process of dying.  And the literature is unanimous on that.

Maybe in another year, when your lab values have crashed, you will think about the advice that was given to you here, on this thread.

I love the argument that anyoen can find a study to support any statement or position. I used to think that way as well. Then a funny thing happened - I was researching WLS procedures, and I have have YET to find a SINGLE published study that touts the superiority of the RNY over the DS in regards to total excess weight loss and long-term weight loss maintenance, yet multiple to the contrary. Oh and in superiority in resolving almost all weight-related comborbidities, especially type 2 diabetes. Some studies try to muddy the waters by grouping the RNY and DS together as malabsorptive procedures, but those that clearly distinguish among procedures can't come up with a conclusion that the RNY is better than the DS for ANYTHING with the possible exception of acid reflux/GERD issues.

But I guess it MUST just be that only pro-DS surgeons are publishing these studies and the RNY surgeons are not conducting studies. That must be it.

I've always had an issue with the getting the surgery that 'works best for you'.  Unless you're a vegetarian (and we've even seen those succeed), there is no reason the DS wouldn't work for someone.  IF you think the RnY will work for you, then there is no reason the DS wouldn't work for you - only easier.  It can be customized to a longer common channel, have a larger stomach, but it would still be a functional DS that address the metabolic issues that the DS corrects.  Of course, for restriction only, I vote for the VSG.  but between the RnY and the DS - the DS works for anyone, as long as you can follow the rules, with less 'food issues' than the RnY.  Does the RnY work?  Sure, for some.  But the DS works better.  A few more vitamins (or the same amount but of a different nature), protein, and limited simple sugars - isn't that what most RnYers do?  What about the DS would be hard to live with?  If you think a 'healthy relationship' with food means careful, restrictive eating - the DS can actually accommodate that too.  But the desire to fear food or avoid food is not a healthy relationship anyway.  Just because we have the DS doesn't mean we CAN'T eat like you, it just means we don't have to when we don't want to.  That does not make us unhealthy OR gluttonous - it makes us like the woman next door with a normal metabolism who eats 'normal' every day, but then twice a month has a binge on ice cream.  Oops, gained a pound!  Better not eat ice cream again until it's gone.  NORMAL!
