WARNING TO PRE-OPS: Think twice, cut once -- or else!

Actually, he DOES do the DS, for now.  He also does RNY, Lap Band, VSG, and revisions.  He's looking at getting away from DS because he has seen too many patients deal with problems like vitamin deficiencies as others have mentioned here, not to mention serious gastrointestinal issues that Gas-X won't touch.  His seminar is very unbiased and presents all facts on equal footing; I happened to ask him questions, and that's when he shared his thoughts with me.  He'd actually prefer that I get the VSG, and my insurance will cover it.  I just know myself well and I feel that a healthy fear and respect of sugar and carbs will serve me better in the long run!  lol

As I mentioned before, I have a family member who has had the procedure.  It has done amazing things for her and her experience was one of the deciding factors for me to pursue WLS as an option.  I applaud anyone and everyone who has success in achieving a healthier, happier, longer life through whatever means works for them.

RNY is what I choose for me, with help and input from 3 doctors (2 of whom specialize in bariatrics) and my aunt, who also happens to be a nurse.  What works for you, or Diana, or my aunt though may not be the path that I feel will meet my needs the best, and I really
don't like people telling me that my choice is wrong.  It's my choice.

And PS: I wasn't necessarily referring to Diana in the "little lambs" statement...  :)

Something I really don't understand is why would the "healthy fear and respect of sugar and carbs" work for you after surgery, when it didn't work before? I'm honestly not understanding. What happens if you don't dump? Then will you have to rely on will power to stay away from those things.

No one was telling you that your choice was wrong, just informing people that they should research all of the WLS options because a revision is often not covered or very hard to fight.

Good luck with your surgery.

, Jules

Bwahahaha -- is that something like a "healthy relationship with food" -- or "healthy eating disorder?"

What a bunch of twisted, Judeo-Christian warped BULL****!!

Wow, I take back what I just posted (and now deleted) in a response to Andrea.

That kind of attitude is NOT healthy, NOT supportive, and absolutely rude.

You may have knowledge, but you have no respect or manners.  You attract more flies with honey, you know.

Yikes...  Someone mentioned something about these types of posts showing what people are really like.  Thanks for proving them right.

What makes you think I give a rat's ass about supporting YOU, an RNY post-op??  This thread is about preventing PRE-OPS from making uninformed choices.  I have no interest in you and your RNY life whatsoever.  If you don't like it, BLOCK ME!

And if you are interested in knowing what kind of "flies" these kinds of posts attract, look here:

Your presumption in telling ME how to post is risable.

Actually, I am pre-op.  Still going through 6-month insurance-required prep.  Which you could have found out if you made an effort to talk TO people, not preach AT them.  Or read signatures, profiles, anything...

Guess you lost your chance to convert me.

I was also hoping maybe you'd re-read some of your postings objectively, perhaps as someone viewing these boards for the first time, because there ARE people visiting these boards tonight for the first time, reading your posts for the first time tonight... silly me.

"What makes you think I give a rat's ass about supporting YOU"

I hope people know we're not ALL like this!

Dont'cha just love the idiots who post a nasty post to someone and then immediately block them?  Guess what, you wasted your time, because all I got was the notice in my email:

Darlene G.'s reply was:

Well, my bad -- I got you confused with a couple of the other idiot post-ops on this thread.  But trust me, I won't miss seeing your posts either.  Why would I make an effort to get to know YOU in the first place with your snarky and ignorant comments?  You're a lost cause anyway.

Good luck with the RNY your supposed DS surgeon is going to talk you into -- because it would be better for YOU, not because he actually doesn't do the DS, of course!

You were warned -- after that, you're on your own.

Someone, please quote me so Darlene sees this.

Here ya go.
Won against big bad (SoCal) Kaiser for a Duodenal Switch  Haven't heard of DS? Kaiser wants it that way. Come on over & read the truth
Hit goal (Normal BMI) on 2-10-11!    I LOVE my DS!!
My approval process timeline:
02/12/09 - Dr. refused to refer me for WLS
03/03/09 - Vented/whined about it on another board, planned to just wait until next year & switch plans
Let's see what happens!  **updates in blog**

I hope this "god among bariatric doctors" told you that most people do NOT dump with the RNY. Just ask people here on the MB. So, if you think that will keep you from eating what you are not supposed to, good luck!

And if you DO dump, most RNYers I know find a way to eat the stuff that will make them dump, but do it when they are at home, etc.  For some, that is something as little as spaghetti sauce and others, it's a cupcake.

You are setting yourself up for failure if you do not educate yourself on the surgery you have chosen.

And that's what this thread is about in the first place, making pre-ops aware of their options and what the future may hold for them in insurance coverage. Encouraging people to think through what they are doing.

If you think people are talking down to you, that's your problem. If you can be swayed by what one person says on an online message board, maybe you do not have what it takes to have any type of bariatric surgery. Weight loss surgery ain't for sissies. And if you don't like what you hear, use the block button.

I had the kick-butt duodenal switch (DS)!

Listen, I never called my doctor a "God among doctors".  I have sat in his seminars,, his support groups, and his office though and when others who have not make inaccurate statements about him I will correct them.

I know that the statistical majority of RNYers don't dump.  And I have researched.  My bookmarks online are overflowing, my binders here at home are stuffed with papers, and my brain sometimes feels like it's oozing out of my ears when I have spent too much time reading.

Again, congrats on your accomplishments best of luck to you.

YES, but who will correct YOUR inaccurate statements about him? You do not even seem to know anything about his DS history. You have him "taking over" for first one, then another DS surgeon. What DO you know about him, other than he will happily take your money for a RNY?

And yes, you do sound reverential about him. He is not a god, he is a man making money.
