nono, you hope you're NOT one of that 10% who sees their diabetes return! I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy!

Jillybean and crazru, finally a voice of reason. You guys are saying exactly what I have been saying for the last 13 pages! Get all of the information on all of the wls. Do not rely on someone's statements that their's is the absolute best wls there ever is and was. Diana might have been trying to say the same thing but it certainly did not come across that way. Her statements came across as being totally DS biased.

I am super glad you all like your choices and I am glad of my choice. I guess we will have to come back 20 years from now and catch up on everybody.

I got my surgery because I had type 2 diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea high cholestrol and triglycerides, athritis, back problems, excoriated skin folds, edema in my lower lega and finally had a heart attack months before I had surgery. I also suffered from multiple yeast infections caused by the diabetes, I think. The list goes on but it is similar to anyone who is overweight and their health suffers for it.

I am happy to state that with the exception of arthritis and a chronic back, I am in the peak of health. My diabetes resolves itself within 4 days of surgery. I no longer take any daily meds except losec so I can take ibuprofen when i need to and of course my vits. I can walk further and I don't suffer from being so obese anymore. Anyone who is morbidly obese knows of those problems.

Living in New Brunswick, I did have a choice of wls. I could have had DS, lap band, RNY, VBG and VSG. All are covered by our provincial health care. I studied all of them and chose which one I thought would best suit me. I am not saying RNY is for everyone but for me it, it works.

Yes, I have had issues with this wls. I'd be lying to say otherwise. More to do with the mental adjustment than physical really. I am getting the hang of it and enjoying my choice.

I do eat carbs. Not a lot of them but I do eat them. I don't really like bread anymore but there are times when I do eat it.  It's not that I can't eat carbs, they just don't taste good anymore.

Jackie,
I had the same concerns when I was planning surgery. I was diabetic for 14 years before. I wanted the best shot. The DS was covered by my insurance but there were no DS surgeons in Tennessee who would take my state insurance. So, I ended up with RNY and hoped for the best. I'm off all meds now. My A1c is 5.1. I do worry though, that the diabetes will come back. If I gain weight again, I expect it will come back. But also, I was on meds that stimulated insulin production for many years. These drugs can destroy the beta cells in the pancreas. I dont know how much damage was done by that, but it is conceivable that the cells can wear out and I will become a Type 1. That is my fear. I believe this can happen to people even who have had a DS. You are young though and probably werent on those type meds. There are better things out there now. All I can do now is be as compliant with my RNY as I can and hope for the best.

I did not choose the sleeve. My Doctor thought it would be best for me first since I had a lot to lose. I was 19 years old when I had my first surgery. She thought I was be a high risk. I was 500 pounds when I had my surgery Jan 31, 08. After I lost 100 pounds she would do the RNY so I could lose the rest of the weight that I need off. But we waited after year form surgery. I lost 150 in one year. The Sleeve is the first step for most big people to get the DS or the RNY so they would  not  be a high risk. Now I'm having hard time to get the insurance to approve for the second step to my weight loss. They are saying that its not a MEDICAL NECESSARY. But after 2 year and lost less the 30% you can be approve again for surgery. That with Anthem. If I knew now back then about the Sleeve I WOULD NOT get the Sleeve. It may work so smaller people if they dont have a lot to lose. I'm not doing the RNY any more. I found out couple months ago about DS. Since I already have the first part of the DS I think the DS would be best for me.

On the journey to losing weight, your friends & family will be the first people to try to knock you off. They do this not out spite, but out of being convicted and knowing they should do the same. It's easier to put someone down for doing the right thing, than for them to actually do it. So at your next family re-union or wherever you are eat your chicken and broccoli and smile when they make jokes about you, they are jealous!

Seth, that just sucks!  This is exactly why I and other DSers try to get people to understand the published literature that shows that having the DS in one step is not only possible in most cases, it is preferable -- both from a medical and from an insurance point of view.

Please don't give up trying to get the switch -- obviously you need it and are entitled to receive it.  You still qualify for bariatric surgery and your DS was a PLANNED two-part surgery.  If you need help fighting Anthem, you know where to find me!

Thanks... The Doctor I had before did not even do DS.So I did not know there was a surgery out there called DS. Then when I sign up on here then I found out about the DS. In my support group there only one person that goes to my support group that I go to. She dont come much so I did not know a lot about it. My 2 years from surgery will be this coming Jan 31. So hopfully I can get approve this surgery. Anthem now has that if  lose less than 30% you can be approve again. So I hope that will work out.

Hi Seth!

Wow, I'm surprised to see that Dr. Inman did the DS in two steps almost 2 years ago!  I had my surgery about 6-8 months before you and she wasn't too big on the sleeve when she and I talked about it as I was looking to decide between the sleeve and the DS.  I'm sure she wanted to do what was best for you, but I had no idea that she was even considering the DS as a two step procedure.  I really hope you get approved.

Are you in the Indy area?  We have a DS group that gets together every single month for dinner, and then also St. V's has a DS specific support group now, though I don't believe it's going the direction we had hoped when we asked for our own group.  Long story.

Please contact me if you'd like more information.  We post our monthly meeting destination on the DS forum here on OH, I'd be happy to keep you up to date!

Good luck with step 2!!
