WARNING TO PRE-OPS: Think twice, cut once -- or else!
Is this from THIS year, already? If so, you are REALLY on the ball, Andrea!

I had the kick-butt duodenal switch (DS)!
HW: 344 lbs CW: 150 lbs
Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea GONE!
I know, crazy isn't it? It's from last night. I was shocked that Kaitlin didn't scream her head off like she did last year.
Apparantly Santa, beyond telling kids that they need to go potty and treat their brothers and sisters with respect, is also telling them he will give them fruits and veggies in their stockings this year. I was a bit.. shocked to hear the spiel last night. Oh, and the fact that Santa was in the mall for a week now.
We've got one tree up in the kids' room already and going to work on the living room tree today. Still have two more beyond that as well. Maybe I'll finally get in the Christmas spirit.. or maybe not.

Uhhhm??? RNY carries the same risks!!!
Plus dumping, a blind stomach, can't take nsaids, pyloric valve destroyed, can't eat normal sized meals. Higher risk of weight re-gain.
ALL wls have risks!
Pick the one that's right for YOU. But, you can't give yourself a fair change of picking the right one if you don't research ALL the available options. Just don't pick one because it's the one MOST people have, or the one with all the tv commercials and billboards, or the most convenient, or most affordable, or the one your pcp reccomends, or the one your cousin had....
I am not preaching DS is right for everyone, but I am strongly suggesting everyone research the benefits and risks of DS before they choose a surgery.

Aha -- as Karen said, here is the source of your insanely jealous, anti-DS postings over the last couple of weeks -- a clear-cut case of DS-ENVY!

As you said, you are not a lightweight. Perhaps you should have paid more attention to RESEARCH such as this:
Duodenal Switch Provides Superior Weight Loss in the Super-Obese (BMI ≥50kg/m2) Compared With Gastric Bypass

Weight Gain After Short- and Long-Limb Gastric Bypass in Patients Followed for Longer Than 10 Years

PRE-OPS: THINK TWICE, CUT ONCE! You don't want to have regrets or DS-envy!

You make a valid and intellient argument nicolle. Thank you and others who have suggested the DS sit for her to come to . I have suggested it too because I know the support I get on the RNY site. If she chooses not to there isn't much else I can do other than be there for her.
I am in the medical field and so I am aware of nutritional requirements and how important it is. My labs on Nov 2 were all perfect and my bone density scan on Sept 9 was fine too. I choose to believe what my registered dietitian and my surgeon tell me I need vitamin wise. I will follow their advise. If they are incorrect my labs will tell. I do not take iron suppliments because my hemoglobin levels are really good so there really is no need for them. Again if I am wrong my blood values will tell. I can and do request blood values fairly frequently.
Ds may be ideal for a lot of people and some people even choose to get revisions to DS. They get revisions to RNY too. For me personally, I am not a great meat or fats person. I was not a big bacon fan even before I had wls. I always found bacon too greasy and too salty. This is not a big selling feature for me. My biggest problem pre wls was carbs, sweets and portion size. I don't believe DSers can eat unlimited carbs or sweets either. RNY has stopped my overindulgence in carbs, sweets and portion size and really that's what I needed.
To each his own. There will always be people who hate or love their wls regardless which one it is.To hate on someones wls choice is akin to hating on someones religious belief. You just don't go there.

This right here is the ONLY initial point of the thread, not that the DS is necessarily better. Rahter, that people sometimes choose to have revisions. BUT if you read Diana's post you will see that some insurance companies are not covering revisions, period, ever. So it is important that all Pre-ops know what surgery they really really want and are informed on all options. Hell, if you have the exclusion for revision surgery you couldn't even go from Lap band to Gastric Bypass if that is what you WANTED.

You really should learn how to respond to posts properly -- if you meant to respond to Nicolle, then you click the reply button on HER post, not at the bottom of the thread, otherwise, your post goes in the wrong place. You've done that twice in this thread. It's not rocket science.
Your boasting about your labs at 9 months out -- and your non-compliance with basic RNY requirements -- belies your supposed medical education. You are living off your stored nutrients, and if you are not supplementing, testing (and testing the RIGHT things, like ferritin and PTH, not just iron and calcium), then by the time you get in trouble, you will be in REAL trouble.
Oh well, you can't fix stupid. People who don't have a clue about self-care shouldn't be allowed to get bariatric surgery in the first place -- but I guess those psych exams aren't rigorous enough because the surgery mills want to keep the money rolling in.
