Thanks Andrea, that's what I thought it meant but wanted to make sure I was understanding it correctly.  I am fortunate that the surgeon I chose does all four of those surgeries, along with revisions.  I just don't necessarily agree that the DS is the best choice for everyone.   However, I was unaware that the DS was as uncommon as it apparently is, because both bariatric surgeons that I researched in my area perform it.

If it's that uncommon then I guess I can see why they'd want to get the information out there.  Again though, I just don't want it shoved down my throat as the only BEST option; I don't want to be told that my choice is crap, as neither would you or anyone else.

Footnote: I spoke with my aunt, and the procedure she had was actually more along the lines of an open RNY, not a DS.  Without going into a lot of detail, it was its own unique procedure and it was done on an emergency basis.  My misunderstanding!

Have a great evening!

So, who are you going to believe...Peter Lalor or Peter Lalor?

Darlene hun, I am sorry but your surgeon just does not do the DS - He may have watched one being done, he may know what it is, but he has never done one.  He is only telling you this because he wants you to have the RNY with him.  If he told you that the DS was better, you would have to go to another surgeon and he would be out the money from your RNY.  If you truly want to say that your decision is based on what your surgeon thinks is best for you, please see a surgeon that does all of them, I mean REALLY does all of them.  Go to dsfacts.com and you can see a list of surgeons that really do perform the DS.

OK where to start? I am not young, I am nearly fifty and two weeks ago had my first complete nutritional blood work done. It came back absolutely perfect. I take 1 multivitimin, b12,calcium citrate and b100 complex as perscribed by both my surgeon and my registered dietitian and I am a nurse. I do not take iron suppliments. I am post menopausal so I don't believe I need them. My levels were excellent.

All I am really saying is wls is a very personal choice.  There are people out there who only had a couple of choices in which wls they had and I think posts like these that suggest one wls or another is the best there ever was might make some people question or doubt about their choice. My friend has issues with her DS and if you go to the DS sites you will find others who are experiencing problems with theirs too. Just as they do with ALL of the wls.  Not one surgery type will suit everyone.

I was not fear mongering about any wls. I have had some problems with my RnY. Luckily they were minor and easily corrected. Some folks have the bands and are absolutely crazy about it. I am biased towards my RnY. Otherwise I guess I would not have had it.

Chad, I would have been more than happy to have had an open dialoge with you but if you are going to act like a child and resort to name calling, i will retract the idea.

You don't "believe" you need iron supplements?  Really?  Do you "believe" in blood tests?  Do you "believe" in DEXA scans?

You're right -- the DS is NOT the right procedure for people like you.

Ummm...you are still early out. Your labs would very likely be good because you are using up your pre-op stores of various vites and nutrients. Talk to Andrea, Melting Mama or Vitalady about vites. They can help you before you tank in the next few months. A deficiency is very hard to correct and what you and your docs think are "perfect" labs really are not. The lab ranges are not what they seem.

I am hijacking this post again.

I am 57 years old and had the DS when I was 53.  I was a revision from a horizontal gastroplasty (old stapling procedure) done in the '80's.

Let me ask you this:

If you had a serious heart problem and the Dr. told you there were 4 procedures to fix it and that the statistics showed that procedure # 4 was the one that statistics showed was the most effective, why would you pick procedure 1, 2, or 3?

Just sayin,

Michele

P.S.  Did you read the RNY bowel issues thread that I posted earlier?

Iron can take 6months to 12 months to tank -- if not longer.

Also, what tests were done to measure your iron?  Serum iron, hct and hgb?  Or also your ferritin and transferrin?

See, I test normal on the first three -- but the last two, which are storage proteins of iron, the ones that show the true state of your iron capacity, are in the toilet for me.  If I were to be in a car crash, have to have surgery, or donate blood -- well, I'd be in a world of hurt because I would not be able to replenish my iron stores.

So the question is -- do you know your labs well enough to REALLY say your labs are perfect?

Also.. did your doc test your PTH and D levels, or just your blood serum calcium level -- something that doesn't change unless there's cancer or a cardiac incident?

ENOUGH ALREADY.... You have your opinion I am happy for you that you feel so good about what you have done.  No need to shove it down our throats.  Some of us didnt have the option no need to make us feel stressed that we somehow got a less perfect surgery than DS.  I am quite happy with my decision and I honestly an quite tired of listening to a few say in guilded words that I made a mistake.  Share happiness in the DS forum already.

Are you post-op?  Can you read?  This thread wasn't directed to or intended for you.

You're "tired of listening" to people tell you you made a mistake?  Then don't read posts from me, don't read posts that have "WARNING TO PRE-OPS" in the title, and fergawdsakes don't read anything about the DS -- it's too late for you anyway.

Might want to start by blocking me to enhance your OH experience.

Wow really harsh response.... Someone dared have an opinion besides you.  I was not discounting your experience or your opinion.  Just tired of people trying to shove their opinion valid or not down new peoples throats.  Good luck in the future hope you continue to be healthy and happy.
