Long Term Success

I believe the reason so any of us have problems keeping our weight off later is because while we have this superb tool of weight loss (the surgery) we don't always address the psycological that got us eating in the first place.  I'm just under 3 years out now, I am not at my goal, but I am at a normal bmi.  When I shop or eat the first thing I try to do is make "healthy choices".  I have become an avid label reader.  Also instead of telling myself "I don't want to get fat" I stay more positive, "I will stay trim and healthy". I am a big beleiver in the power of the mind.

Lilitu, you said so many things that I believe are key!  (Especially the part about what you tell yourself) I start every day saying what I'm grateful for.  I believe if you tell yourself "I will stay trim and healthy" that you train your subconscious to do the things that point you in that direction.  The mind is so much more powerful than anyone realizes.

So Blessed!
on 11/2/09 5:22 am

I'll be 5 years out on Sunday.

Not claiming to be perfect, but for the most part, I...
- weigh every day.
- do immediate damage control if my weight drifts 2 pounds above goal.
- record my weight on an Excel chart every Monday morning.
- eat protein first, mostly lean meats, cheese, beans, nuts and seeds.
- eat my meals from small dishes or condiment bowls - it's cute.
- don't eat unless/until I'm physically hungry and I stop eating the minute my pouch is full.
- carry my food to work in 1 cup sized Tupperware.
- keep WLS friendly food in my freezer and pantry.
- stopped eating out as much.
- avoid eating late at night

For additional inspiration, I'm planning to wear my wedding dress again when we renew our vows.  I also enjoy not having to lie about my weight on my drivers license.

AWESOME LIST!  I find that when I weigh in the morning that I expect to see my number and when I started recording it every day it basically stopped fluctuating. I'd say my list would be identical to yours.  I'll add a few more things below.

-
always eat breakfast
-wake up every morning with a grateful list and concentrate on the positive (don't sweat the small stuff) Be aware of using food to self medicate if I do experience anxiety.
-visualize my future self as thin

I do one more thing that's probably not appealing to many others.  I eat very boring stuff because I look at food as fuel.  Food (for me) enables me to live.  I don't live to eat anymore.  If I fix all that fancy diet food I can eat too much of it just like the regular stuff so I choose not to.  I hope that helps!

My mentors were a 93 and a 92, same surgery as me. And those at my first support group were 80's ppls. Now *I* take care of them.

But if it was not for THEM being at that first meeting, reaching back to pull us rooies forward, I KNOW I would not be where I am. I'm sure of it.

The monthly accountability, when we do our annual tour and meet ppl around the country IRL, all of that makes us have to stay within our wt range, AND we have to look healthy, not pasty, or gray. KWIM?

Hi Teresa
What a small world....I live in Sparks Nv and on Jan 24th 2005, Dr Ganser gave me the tool of RNY. I also have also maintained 100% excess weight loss. I owe Dr Ganser my life.  Norma

I'm here! I'll be 9 years out in March. I started at 260 and lost 130.  I've maintained since I reached goal.  You'll see all the stuff I'm involved in on my signature.  I've been a member of OH since my first consult for WLS and have stayed here trying to help.  It's great to see you here and I've often thought of trying to combine info with others as far out.  Let me know if I can help.
