Pre-ops: Make sure you learn about the DS before you chose your surgery!
That being said. I don't think posting a bunch of negatives about the surgery most of us have is very neighborly. Cant you say what is good about the switch without saying what you think is negative about the RNY?? Being negative is NOT helpful.
Wow! So what you're really saying is that we should keep the RNY crap a secret so people won't know what they're getting into and go ahead and get RNY because they don't know any better. I don't see how you could get much "*****ier" than that! Good grief woman, we're talking about peoples lives here and you want to get stingy with the facts?
I have a pretty good perspective about RNY, I had it for 28 years and while it did help me lose the excess weight originally, it was no help in keeping the weight off. The life you lead long term with RNY is not something I would wish on anyone, but that is my perspective. I didn't like being in a diet forever and I didn't like having to exercise to maintain my weight. Don't get me wrong, I like to exercise; I work out three times a week with a personal trainer. I'm saying I didn't like that I had no choice in the matter if I wanted to maintain my weight.
If you like being on a strict diet and you like not being able to eat certain things and you like eating very small quantities RNY would work for you. I hated that and I fought it for 28 years and I lost the weight battle. You can read all the details if you want to on my profile; it's public.
Pull you head out girl, people need to know everything about all the WLS so they can make an informed decision. Hiding the after effects of RNY is not something I would recommend to anyone. People should know all the good, bad and ugly.
I'm just stunned by your ignorant attitude.

This is not surprising.
I almost died from a choice I made back in 1984. Unfortunately, then I had little information on which to make a choice. I had silicone breast implants, which ruptured and 20 years later nearly killed me.
Women who want implants get very irate at anyone who mentions that implants are foreign objects, there is risk of rupture (and leakage, even with the gummy bear) and they have to be replaced every 10 years or so.
I have had women be downright nasty to me, accusing me of "scaring" women.
It's crazy.
I regret getting an RNY instead of DS. I admit it. I don't know if I had the energy thought to fight insurance. I can second guess myself a million times, but it is what it is.

You have a great attitude Jeane, knowledge is always power, ignorance is always bad, even if it seems like bliss. I wish I had known about the DS 10 years ago; but I just figured that everyone who had WLS had the same problems I was suffering with; I had no clue about the DS. I lost 10 years to morbid obesity because of my ignorance on the subject.
Trying to educate people who have this choice is what this is all about. If someone wants to choose RNY or Band after they know all the pros and cons of all the WLS available; more power to them. The ones I feel bad about are people like you who didn't know and made their choice based on incomplete or inadequate information.
I sure with surgeons would offer correct information on all the choices to their patients, but I know that just isn't going to happen; there's too much $$$$ involved.

Most of us have the RNY and will not be helped by you bashing it. It is now our reality. Be nice.
You can say whats good about the DS without saying bad things about the RNY.
Now, have a nice, healthy day.
The dumping, stoma bs, blind pouch, inability to take NSAIDS, chewing food to mush without being able to drink with it and loss and regain statistics were all reasons I knew I couldn't live that way.
The masses of people I saw revising from other surgeries to the DS was a little clue too. So YAH, we need to know good and bad to decide how we want to live the rest of our lives.
Daina was one of several people that were very helpful to me when I came here, and I have seen her help hundreds more since then, so when someone whines about about her delivery or whatever, I figure that's just tough twinkies.

Thanks to Diana, AmandaDS and Melissa Mermaid, just to name a few, I discovered that there WAS an option to RNY.
I weighed 279 # and had GERD, HBP, High Cholesterol, sleep apnea and Type ll diabetes. I was on a plethora of Rx medicines. All of my co-morbidity's were cured except for the GERD, which I had for 25 years prior to the surgery. The GERD is sometimes better, sometimes the same, I take OTC medication for it and really did not expect it to be resolved.
I had been researching WLS and had just about determined that I would have NO surgery if the RNY was all that was available. I had already been through an old stapling procedure and did not want another surgery that was not going to work for me. I just did not want a "surgically induced diet". I wanted to be NORMAL.
My insurance at the time did not cover DS, only the RNY so I chose to self-pay and went out of the country to get it done. I robbed my retirement, saved and borrowed. I figured I was worth the price of a new car!
The DS is the best thing that ever happened in my life, after my family!

You echo my sentiments perfectly! I had a VBG (and a revision/repair to the staple line). My family wanted me to have another WLS - I fought them for YEARS because I absolutely would have rather lived fat than risk the possibility of dumping and failure (again). To appease them, I started researching here on OH - and Tammy Bishop showed me the way to the DS! I never looked back!

Im not afraid to endure the complications of the RNY or the DS, my one biggest fear is going through this entire process and invasive procedure with no sucess plus weight regain. Because of this I would like the opportunity to consider the DS as a possibility. My issue is this: I have Mn Medica choice(I know appealing there decision is possible) There are no surgeons in my area who perform the DS, I would have to travel to Minneapolis 3hrs away just to get the surgery plus everytime I would need follow up. I just simply cant afford to do that This may seem like a silly reason to some but its very real for me. So im hopefully gonna make RNY work to its max for me.
You have to do what you have to do.
Having said that, you should know that many people have traveled THOUSANDS of miles to get the DS, including flying to Brazil, Spain, Saudi Arabia, etc., for the privilege of having the best surgery for them. Follow up care is arranged. Having to travel 3 hours is ... well, inconsequential in the larger picture. But, you've got to live with the consequences of your decision. If that is too much for you to endure, perhaps the DS isn't best for you.
