Pre-ops: Make sure you learn about the DS before you chose your surgery!
"Doing a lap bands on super morbidly obese patients with all the peer reviewed contrary data to date available worldwide is nothing short of malpractice."
YES! YES! I agree. I am appalled at the behavior of many bariatric surgeons...not to mention the big money behind the lap bands and all their commercials flooding the airways.

I was going to have my rny dec 17 09, Yes I changed my mind, and I ,m now getting ds!!!! Thank to the ds board!!! I want a normal life, for get puke,in,getting food stuck, and not living but excisting. My ex sister in law, had rny and she keep telling me I,d regret the rny. Thank goodness, the ds board reasured me,that my insurance paid for ds. and my rny dr. lied big time saying my insurance did not cover it.I go to my ds Dr. appointment tomarrow and wa la, my insurance does cover it. So my best advice is, if you want ds go to a Dr. who does ds.
Thanks! Perhaps you'd like to add to this post, in which people "testify" to the positive effects of the "surgery wars":

I never had heard about the DS when I was told about WLS.
The only options I was told about were the RNY and
lap band.
I ended up have the RNY because I knew I was allergic to
the lap band material. I also wanted to lose more weight
than what the lap band would do for me since I had a BMI
of 53. I wished I would of been able to get the DS. While I
am not too far from my goal, I have already passed my
surgeons goal of 187 for a 5'3" woman. I was not satisfied
to be 187 pounds.
I am working for a much lower goal weight.
*I wish* the surgeons or Dr's had told me about the DS.
I was having symptoms of type 2 diabetes, lots of
comorbities. Why keep the DS a secret? It takes much
longer to do while the lap band is in and out and then RNY
is a fairly short surgery also.
I would of chosen a very experienced DS surgeon.
Thank you for getting the DS word out.
LeaAnn does a good job as others do too.
So far at 4+ years the RNY has been okay

I agree - I did ask my surgeon about DS and he had nothing but negative to say about it.
All his office staff repeat the verbiage like echos - oh DS isn't done very often, for a reason.
Geesh.
Well, at that point, I would have had to fight insurance and I did not have the health or energy to do so.
I am already healthier in some ways - no racing heart anymore, and no high sugar levels.
So I'm going to take it a day at a time, and see what happens. I'm trying to stick with the program as much as possible.
