Alcohol after WLS
Let's break down:
I think you are completely off your rocker. I don't give a fig what kind of education or degree you think you have...you need help with your own issues before you come here trying to save the world, one social drinker at a time.
You are the one who is an admitted addict, to what seems to be everything under the sun. Work on yourself and stop worrying about the fact that you clearly are unable to live as others live. Don't let your envy or jealously of other's control over their lives cloud your ability to live a good life. You may not scold or control others..it's not good for your recovery....come on, you should already know this!
What question do you really want the answer to? You said above...
Why drink? I know it’s a personal choice. I just want you to ask yourself why you would make the choice to drink.
For gawd's sake...are you honestly this dense? Are you on heavy painkillers that are dulling your ability to read and comprehend? Or, are you simply a loney, bored, sick woman who's only outlet in life a this time is found in this place. I am quite sure you are in hog-heaven with all of this attention payed to you...but really, is it worth it to be seen as nothing more than a ****stirrer and a pitifully ignorant soul?
The answer you say you are looking for is simple...
Some people drink alcoholic beverages because they like it. They like the taste of a beer on a hot day. They like the way wine can enhance the flavor of foods. They like the feeling of relaxation that a martini can bring after a hard day at work. They like the bubbles of champagne served at the wedding toast...and beyond.
And yes, some people like it just to get buzzed, drunk, and sometimes even hammered once in a while. All the while, it's none of your business, nor right, nor responsibility, to ask anyone to defend their behavior or choices(as adults I might add) to you!
Sometimes alcohol leads to problems for some, more often it does not. But, it's still the individual's choice to imbibe or not. It does no good to scold or try to make people feel guilty because they choose to do something you obviously can not. They drink because they can and because they like it! Do you really not understand that?
Honestly, having the education you say you do...you would already know these answers, now wouldn't you.

It has not affected my weight loss in the slightest because I didn't even consider drinking any alcohol until many months after I reached my goal. Further, it hasn't caused any significant problems with any weight gain because I tend to keep a close eye on the effects it may have in that regard. Gain a pound or two after drinking wine a few nights in a row? It's time to cut back on that particular splurge. Personally, weight issues have never been a worry for me with regard to alcohol consumption.
I do notice that it can affect me more quickly than it did pre-op. Twice as much effect? Perhaps not to that degree, but it does act fast. However, eating tends to slow the effect. Typically, the effects seem to discipate at about the same rate as it did before surgery. Of course, I keep a very close watch on how much and how fast I consume and I never drive after drinking, not even after one glass of wine with a meal.

Thank you for your response to the above "professional". I too drink socially, especially tailgating for football!!! I have never been a fan of beer, so that leaves alcohol. I have tried different drinks, have always stayed away from the sweet frozen ones (use to be diabetic - thank you RNY for ending that phase of my life) but love bloody mary's, 7 and 7's and occasionally a glass of wine. I have not (yet) dumped on any of them, but I can only have 1/2 a drink and can feel the effects. I don't drive even after 1/2 and still lose weight as I continue my journey. I think being responsible, with or without bariatric surgery, is the most important thing. Only you know what your limits are and since we are supposed to be adults... it is your choice.
Why would you do that? For snobbery? For social acceptance?
In my culture we participate in feasts to be social. Think I'm going to continue that? I've already stopped.
A whole section of my family are wine aficionados and they don't even know I don't drink wine, because I just taste theirs and say, That's good but I'm in the mood for ...."
The benefits of wine for a woman are at a dose of 1 oz per day every day, or if you prefer, one small glass of wine every other day. Any less and there are no benefits. Any more and the problems with alcohol outweigh any benefits. If you want the benefits, drink grape juice. Better, yet eat grapes and reduce the sugar dose and add fiber.
Actually, now that I think about it, the reason that women can tolerate far less alcohol is not only because of their body weight. It is also due to the lack of an enzyme required to metabolize it. That enzyme is make in the stomach. That may explain why alcohol effects people who have had WLS more than normal. Another reason not to bother.
The fact that you even need to justify your behavior should make you re-examine your behavior. Just as I have had to re-examine my eating behavior.
None of the above apply to me. I've said what I meant to say. Take it or leave it, as will I. You, my dear, are the one who is out to defend their position...and with very few, if any, takers I might add.
Again, I truly hope you are able to have a fantastic day.
