Well do you all know that after RYN 85% of the alcohol goes right to your liver. I would love to have a drink, but not sure i am willing to risk my liver.

OK, so this may sound stupid and I am pre-op right now, however I heard that if you drink after RNY that it puts you at a higher risk of getting an ulcer - is this true?? I am not really a drinker now, but in case the mood ever hits me to have a drink I was just curious!
thanks
Brandi

I used to be able to drink quite a bit before surgery.  Now one drink does it for me.  It almost makes me drunk on the one drink.

I'm 5 months post op.  Went to a wedding this past weekend.  I had 1 glass of white wine sipped verrry slowly and a cheese/cracker appetizer.  No buzz for about 30 minutes.  I don't drink regularly anyway, but I did want to enjoy a little something since I couldn't eat alot of the food and none of the cake.  It was a special, meaningful treat.  I may have another around the holidays.
Just takin' it one day at a time.

Tammi...I went on a cruise to the Caribeaan spelled wrong about 3 months post op.  I didn't want to tell anyone about my surgery at first so I tried.  I found 2 as a limit for painkillers...(didn't dump I was sure I would.  Now that I'm a year out about 1 to 1 1/2 glasses of wine and I'm ASLEEP!  No good for nothin...before surgery I could drink a small bottle myself....those days are over THANK GOD!  Patty

Hi everyone... so glad this thread was started!  I too wondered if it was just me or everyone else who had experienced the quick onset and just as quick over it of alcohol.  I am about 3 years out and last year for the holidays I decided to join my husband in the holiday cheers while at a formal dance... needless to say the champagne tasted great! light, sweet with just the right amount of bubbly!  I was the life of the party for the nite!  however by the time we were halfway home I sobered up and was astonished at how quickly the quantity of liquor had affected me!  Needless to say when I feel the need to indulge I stick to the half glass rule!

IMHO (in my humble opinion).... This journey is abt life style adjustments and changes. You must decide what can be changed and what can be adjusted. I personally like a drink or 2 after work or before bed. I have adjusted to non carbonated, lower calorie drinks. I am losing weight and happy with that. I think it comes down to choices and what you find as acceptable changes in your life.

WLS has completely taken any enjoyment out of alcohol for me. I drink about an inch off a martini and I'm slurring my words. 30 minutes later, I'm stone-cold sober. I can't find that middle ground of mellow. Since that's all I drink alcohol for, there is no longer any point. I guess I'll have to get my mellow some other way.

I can't drink wine at all - makes me dump.  I switched to liquor and sometimes I can have a couple drinks and it is like I drank nothing and other times, the same amount of drinks makes me plastered.  I don't know what the difference is.

I actually don't seem to get as hung over as I used to.  Could just be because I am not drinking as much to get the same effect.    I have to watch it because I don't know how it is going to effect me.

WOW!!! Thank you Eg suzie! i was getting irritated, the whole reason for this post was to find out how it effects us, not to have someone badger people about what they do , if they do not like the topic do not read it.  That is great if you do not drink or want to .  That is your choice.  But please do not be so harsh to everyone else answering the question asked.
