Restaurant Card ??

You're right, of course. Everything I've posted so far has been an elaborate lie; I don't care at all about social events--the whole reason I had WLS was to be able to pay the child's price at buffets. Congratulations on seeing through my evil plan!

Or possibly, as I've posted elsewhere, I don't actually want to go to buffets, but I'm not enough of an entitlement ***** to demand that entire large groups of family, friends, or co-workers change their plans to accommodate MEEEEEE, and yet I still want to be social when that is the majority choice. Some people have stated that they would be embarrassed to show a waiter a card that said they had WLS; I would be much more embarrassed to make demands of family, friends, or co-workers.

And obviously, most of the time people do choose non-buffets restaurants. But 1) I don't need advice on what to do at regular restaurants, as I already know to order a healthy app or side, and 2) I was responding to your comment about buffets, so that's what I commented on.

LOL, Drama Queen much?

I've never known anyone who is forced to go to buffets enough to make this such a huge problem.  You guys REALLY LOVE your buffets.  Wow!

"Some people have stated that they would be embarrassed to show a waiter a card that said they had WLS; I would be much more embarrassed to make demands of family, friends, or co-workers."

If you think preferring not eating at buffets you right now makes you demanding, that's sad.  Actually, it's unfortunate you'd have to DEMAND to not go to a buffet.  Are your friends and co-workers so selfish that they can't accommodate you in this way, for the next few months?  I have vegan friends and I make sure that when I'm going out with them, there will be vegan choices, if I'm the one in charge of choosing a place to eat.  It's really not rocket science to make eating out choices that make everyone happy.  It takes very little planning, really.  The interweb is a wonderful thing, you may want to consider using it to read menus.

"And obviously, most of the time people do choose non-buffets restaurants."

Then problem solved!!  LOL, pay a whopping $8, eat just a little, and smile knowing this won't last THAT long.

"But 1) I don't need advice on what to do at regular restaurants, as I already know to order a healthy app or side, and 2) I was responding to your comment about buffets, so that's what I commented on.

Alrighty then!

Really, this isn't such a big deal.  By the end of the year, this will most likely be a non-issue for you.

I tried reasonable explanations, but you responded with dismissive condescention  (I couldn't simply have a different viewpoint, I must be "cranky"). So I tried sarcasm. Apparently that didn't work either.

Again, you're being dismissive and condescending while managing to totally miss the point. I will try one last time before giving up:

No, no one is being "forced" to do anything. "Preferring" anything isn't demanding, but yes, I do think that it would be entitled and demanding to insist that 15 other people change their plans, on those rare occasions when the majority chooses a buffet. Yes, I'm sure they would accommodate me, but I don't think it's reasonable for 1 person to dictate to 15.

This is nothing like a vegan not wanting to go to a steakhouse, as it is perfectly possible for me to find healthy choices at a buffet; it's just a waste of money to pay for a buffet when I'm going to eat the portion I should have (I won't speculate on why you imagine that I secretly want to go to buffets and eat until I burst).

It's really not rocket science to make eating out choices that make everyone happy.  It takes very little planning, really.  The interweb is a wonderful thing, you may want to consider using it to read menus.

Wow, more condescention while still missing the point. Feel free to assume that my companions and I are not complete morons, and that when restaurants are chosen, they are done so intelligently, keeping the needs and desires of the majority (but not necessarily the outliers) in mind.

No, it's not a huge problem; I was unaware that asking advice for minor problems was a faux pas on this board.

By the end of the year, this will most likely be a non-issue for you.

That leaves this Christmas, which is what I was asking about.

$8? I don't care about saving $3 at Golden Corral, I'm talking about hotels that do a buffet at Christmas. They don't offer ala carte options during their holiday buffet, and it's a lot more than $8.

So, that's where I am. If you have any useful suggestions, they are welcome. If you just want to be condescending while assuming I'm an idiot, then please don't bother.

Nearly ANYWHERE you go, you can ask for ala carte items, something prepared simply (such as grilled).  There is no need to eat off a buffet, ever.

Instead of ordering off a children's menu, order from the appetizer menu.  You're bound to find much healthier items.

If you travel a lot, look into stocking up on non-perishable items that are easy to stow away, and require no refrigeration.  It's not really that hard to do.

wow, sometimes you do have to go to a buffet...work has functions that require you to go and also family functions. Whats the big deal...its a CARD!!! LOL  :)

I never said you didn't have to GO to a buffet, I said you didn't have to EAT from one.  There is no need to ONLY order from the ALL YOU CAN CRAM INTO YOUR MOUTH menu.  You do know it's possible to order ala carte, and if needed, you call ahead and make that request, right?   LOL, some buffets even have that option on their menu.   If told they're either going to sell you a grilled hunk of meat or nothing at all, odds are, they're going to grill you a hunk of meat.

I realize some people here think they're entitled to cards, and special treatment, LOL.  If it means THAT much to you, since you eat MOST meals at a buffet, and are afraid to ask for a small simple grilled item (for instance), you go right on ahead and use your card.

Me?  I'd rather just act like a normal person who orders small amounts and either takes home left overs or chucks them.  Buffets, for the most part, offer crappy unhealthy food (Vegas is a whole other story), and therefore I avoid them like the plague.

A buffet is an even better example of how foolish the idea is that you "deserve" to pay less for eating less. Should the marathon eaters pay double?

I do know though, that at a restaurant its nice to have that card if you are ordering breakfast...the kids portions are a lot smaller than adult size and you get to get the same type of food.....
