Do any of you know how to get a weight loss surgery restaurant card?  I haven't had any problems where I live, but while on vacation when I asked about ordering on the children's menu the waitress asked if I had a card.  I told her no, but I'd be glad to let her look at my surgery scars.  She burst out laughing and let me order.

OMG.  She actually ASKED?

Talk about embarrassing and invasive.

Those cards are awful.  Don't.

I was planning to get one; in what way are they awful?

Basically, you are claiming that you deserve special treatment because of WLS. It's not like we have a food allergy that could kill us, you know? Just order something and take home the leftovers or share with someone.

Taking home leftovers is fine most of the time, but it's not terribly convenient when traveling. Yes, it would be asking for (slightly) special treatment, but I don't see the harm in asking. They are free to say no.

So leave the leftovers. The food is the smallest expense in the whole place when you eat out. If the chef prepares a smaller portion, s/he still does just as much work just as much energy is used and just as much service is involved. You still occupy your table for the same length of time and require the same kind of attention.

We do not deserve anything extra or special because we eat less. It is illogical to assume otherwise.

They why are lunch portions less expensive and supersized portions more expensive? It's true that food costs are about 1/4 of the cost of dining out, but there is some correlation between portion size and cost.

I think it's wasteful to order 2-4X what I can eat and have to throw most of it away.

Actually, lunch portions costing less has little to do with the size of the portions. In fact, a number of restaurants charge less at lunch for essentially the same food they serve at dinner.  This is done because:

--Restaurants typically get fewer customers at lunch, so they offer lower prices hoping to draw in more business
--Some also look at lower priced lunches as a loss leader; they hope people will enjoy the food and come back for dinner.
--They normally have fewer staff during lunch, so not as many costs to cover with the price of the meal.

I was referring to restaurants that offer smaller vs. larger portions at dinnertime. They sometimes refer to the smaller portion as the "lunch portion."

Everything you said is true, but it's also true that most restaurants do charge less for smaller portions than they do for larger portions.

Well, that makes a few of us who "get it."

When I'm visiting especially touristy cities:  NYC, Rome, Paris, etc. I do try to take my largest meal during the mid-day if possible, since like you, I realize the value of it.  Though I'd never sweat losing a few dollars on a buffet,  I do appreciate a good deal, when I can get it.

/sigh
