high iron ferritin & b12 levels??

I am over 4 years post op and just received results back from my labs done a few weeks ago.  My iron ferritin level (iron storage)  & b12 levels are very high.  I have been referred to the GI department for my iron ferritin levels.  My doctor's appt isn't until October 19th.  Has anyone ever had high iron ferritin levels?  If so what was the outcome?
Thanks,
Monica

are you currently taking a vitamin that contains iron?

Yes, I am currently taking iron and b12 along with all my others as I have been instructed to year after year from the docor.  The letter from my docor did not tell me to discontinue taking anything.  The letter states my iron is within acceptable limits but my iron ferritin (iron storage) is extremely high.

I wish I had that problem, my ferritin and b12 levels are in the toilet. I start my iron infusions in the morning and have been doing injectable b12. Can I ask what you were taking?

First thing in the morning I take a 27mg iron pill with a 500 mg vitamin C for better absorbtion.
Then mid morning I take a senior vitamin and 1000mg b12.  Around lunch time I take approx 650 mg calcium.  Before bed I take a regualr multi vitamin and approx 350 mg calcium.

I have a normal iron and a very high ferritin level.  There are other reasons for high ferritin levels other than too much iron.  Sometimes it is strictly some type of inflamation in your body.

What are your Hemoglobin, Hemacrit, Iron Sat%, TIBC, RBC - are these normal?  If none of these are high, then it most likely has nothing to do with your iron levels.

How high was the ferritin?

You might ask for a Sed Rate and C-Reactive Protein to check for inflamation.  If these are normal, then check more into the iron stuff.  My doctor just ordered these last week.

As far as your B-12, don't worry about it.  We want it to be high.  The normal range is usually up to 900 and we want it to be atleast 1000.  Mine was 1300 and the doctor said it is fine, I just pee out the excess.

hello again.  I just found your post from many years ago on a google search which I thought was pretty funny since I responded to you when you originally posted on here.  I used to be a regular on here but dont come on here very much anymore.

I thought I would respond to you again even thought it has it has been many years because I am in the same situation you were in and I can give you a lot more information now than I could before as I am being treated for all of this right now.

My gastric bypass was on Oct. 27, 2008.  I took oral iron - for the first 4 years with no problems.  I had great iron and ferritin levels - I took a prescription iron at first called Repliva (but they took it oft the market after the first year. So, after that I took carbonyl iron - which I got from VItalady.com called tender irons - they worked really well. I took 180mg per day with 1200mg of vitamin C with 1200mg of vitamin C = the vitamin C is already in the capsules.

then at around my 4 year mark, I all of a sudden stopped absorbing my iron altogether and within 1 month - my ferritin dropped from 100 to 20.   I was already seeing a hematologist for other problems, so he started me on IV iron weekly for 8 weeks and then after that - I get them once per month for maintainance.  They really help.

The one problem that we have is testing to see if I need the iron and that is why your post stands out to me.  Every time I went in for a surgery, My ferritin would jump up to about 500 - 600 and take 5 months to go back down to 80-100 which was my normal.  Unfortunately for the next few years, I had way too many surgeries, so my ferritin was always way too high.  It wasnt until that one time in 2012 when my levels suddenly dropped.

Now, I am getting the IV iron and I have tons of inflamation in my body - between kidney stones, nephritis, arthritis and bowel problems - my last ferritin was 1050 - yes - that is one thousand fifty.  There is a test that can be done for patients that have alot of inflamation in there body to determine if they have Iron Deficiency - it is called Soluable Transferrin Receptors - if it is high - then you are iron deficient.  Well, mine is high even with a ferritin of 1050.  A few of my doctors get crazy when they see my ferritin level and even my hematologist did for awhile but when I found this other test for him to do - it really changed things.  Last month - he said he couldnt give me my normal IV iron because my ferritin was 750 and the soluable transferin was normal , so we said we would wait for another month and retest well the next month - the soluable went way up - so he gave it to me but instead of my ferritin dropping - it went up to 1050.

I do hope this helps you

I just reviewed my lab report and everything else is fine/normal.  My iron ferritin is 229.7 ng/ml, the suggested range is 6.0-115.0 ng/ml.  My b12 is 2210 pg/ml and the suggest range is 230-1050.
