Stacy,

your Mother should have a right to health care  and it is horrible, ugly, unfair and fiscally stupid that this has happened.

I so hope we get real reform but I am afraid the money - which the insurance companies have so much of - will speak louder than the needs of people.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

I know you started this thread just to expose and argue and put a face on the health care crap in this country--but now that you did, you've also gotten some good advice so that's a good thing, right?

I just want you to also call the billing department or just show up there with hospital bills in tow, make sure they give you copies of everything and QUESTION anything that doesn't look right, and you DO have a right to negotiate billing AND many hospitals (private ones at least) have funding from sources who will help pay for bills of unfortunate people such as your mom. Hospitals are known for double charging and being out of control--so be your best proactive daughter that you can be.

I worked at a hospital and was only part time so didn't get insurance and suffered a DVT (blood clot) and although I wasn't hospitalized, I still had a $4000 bill for just  few hours (cannot even imagine what that had been if I'd been admitted) but they found a way to get it all covered for me! And it wasn't just because I worked there, shoot, nobody even knew me! Not like I had years invested in the place.

So while you're helping out your mom (I know exactly what you're going through--my mom is 74 and on Medicare/Medicaid on a disability retirement) and just doing the paperwork alone is a full time job...argghhh!

But hang in there, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! Good luck to you both.

And just today, another heartwrenching story on OH.  Too many people falling through the cracks.

I love this. Conservatives don't mind spending billions to start an unneccessary war, but using billions to actually save the lives of people in our own country? That's just socialism!

Wow, what a quiet thread.  Interesting, eh?  Where are the responses from all those who have been so ANTI-universal health care?  Stacy, perhaps you could rename the thread, so they'll have a reason to pop their noses in here.

Hello?  Anyone out there?  /tap /tap /tap

Does this mic work?

Oh, they're all at their jobs -- we're just here cuz we have no jobs and subsist on public assistance wanting more handouts, donchaknow!

I was wondering where all the objections to universal health care were.  They are silent to say the least.  They are happy in their own little world with their insurance coverage, and not thinking about the guy that has none.  I'm more then willing to contribute so that everyone in America has health care.  I don't even begin to understand the arguments against it.  A lot of people are one hospitalization away from bankruptcy.  That just isn't acceptable.

They either don't understand the concept of the thread, or they are busy sticking their head in the sand (or elsewhere.)

Maybe the people who are against Obama's socialist agenda are not responding to this because obviously this woman is in pain and she is hurting for a loved one.  Just because we are not for universal health care does not mean we are uncaring.  Out of respect I would not criticize her opinion.

Oh, so they think this situation is fair and just and as it should be, they're just sparing her feelings?  Gotcha!
