I really hope something good happens soon. So many people are falling through the cracks. I think education for those ignorant of what health care means to those who cant afford it is key to getting something done. Sometimes the lack of compassion I see today staggers me.

I am so sorry this happened to your family!  It's not right.  We're being preyed on by big insurance and a corrupt system and some people are just dogass dumb enough to perpetuate the manipulation.  I'm angry as hell because of stories like yours!  I post everyday about the importance of changing the system.  I've even been writing hate mail to a local DJ that spews faux news type garbage.  I don't know that there's much that can be done, however, when paying off politicians to work for corporate interests is not a crime.  We need tax-funded universal healthcare coverage for all Americans.  That would put the insurance conglomerates out to pasture, tho, and they're fighting with their big bucks to stop that from happening.  Money speaks louder than heart surgery and strokes, evidently.  It makes me insane!

All the spin is enough to make me sick.... unfortunately I cannot afford to be sick.

The more I look at things lately the more I think I want to be Canadian. Universal health care and the ability to marry my partner, why do I even stay here. I think if it wasn't for my family and current employment I would be gone.

I hear you, Bear.

Yanno what the repube answer to this is -- "we can't rely on the government to solve all our problems."

I wish their houses would burn to the ground and when they try to call 911 they'd get a recording that says they shouldn't rely on the government to solve their problems!!

NO ONE can afford to be sick, thanks to the "health-care elitists."

Ironic that they call liberals elitists when liberals aren't denying people basic rights, like health care and freedom to marry, huh?

Across the United States, in 2006, twice as many people died from lack of health insurance as died from homicide.

LeaAnn, thank you so much for your support, but more importantly, for being so vocal about this issue.  I'm ashamed to say I wasn't vocal enough until it affected my family.  Sure, I've always been proud to tell people I'm probably one of the most liberal people they know, but how much did I do to show it, or support liberal causes?  Not enough...but our system has to change, and change NOW!

Can I deep down admit that I'm vocal because of selfish reasons?  Because I'm not so stupid to not realize that i might be on the receiving end of needing help someday.  Even though I'm covered by private insurance at the moment, insurance companies make money by denying people that are sick.  SURE, the insurance is HAPPY to take my money right now -- I'm not SICK!

People need to wake up!!  We are all being used and the politicians are being paid to do NOTHING!

I can really understand the fustration and heartbreak of this issue. I've been so lucky to always have access to good health insurance.

I wanted to smack my sister the other day though when I saw that she posted something against the universal healthcare on her Facebook. It wasn't even something of her own, but a quote she saw posted somewhere by someone else. It was like it's doomed because congress is going to pass it even though none of them have even read it and even the president hasn't read it, the surgeon general is obese, and head of the treasury doesn't pay his taxes. I don't know, just a bunch of idiotic nonsense!

The thing is my sister has had all of her kids on Medicaid since they were born. She's usually been stay-at-home and her husband paints houses when he does have a job. I don't know how many times she's thanked God for the coverage because otherwise she'd never be able to get het kids the healthcare and meds that they needed (and they've needed a lot). Yet she wants to deny the same benefit to people because they maybe make more money that her family, but not enough to afford insurance or can't get it due to pre-existing conditions, etc.

So Blessed!

Two years ago, my husband's 19 year old cousin was walking home from work one day and was struck by a hit and run driver.  He was in ICU for weeks before he died.  His parents did have insurance, but it still wasn't enough to cover everything.  They were wiped out financially.  There should be something in place to help families like this too.

Stacy, thank you so much for telling your story.  Some people just don't GET it.  I hope your mom gets the help she needs.

I get frustrated at these yoyos who believe all the crap propaganda that's being put out by the folks against covering everyone. I was ready to choke someone after she started holding forth at our weekly staff meeting about the death tribunals that were going to happen under the Obama plan.

I feel your pain. My mother was laid off after 14 years at a crap job she took after my dad died (she was way overqualified, but with four little kids you need medical insurance) at age 59. She was able to get my deceased father's Social Security a little later, but had no medical coverage until she qualified for Medicare at age 65. She only went to the doctor to get reupped on her hypertension medications and we had to pay out of pocket.

As soon as she qualified for Medicare, we took her into the doctor and she was diagnosed with diabetes, COPD and some other issues. We don't have any idea how long she had the diabetes.

I hope our leaders are able to do something to get everyone covered.

Best of luck!
