I am one week out today, and I am having problems getting my water in because of the taste.  It tastes salty to me and it makes me feel sicky and I can hardly stand it, plus it leaves a horrible after taste.  So far I have tried different bottled waters and adding Crystal Light. but nothing has worked so far.  Whats my deal and how can I get around this big obstacle?  Anyone have this or any ideas?  I am open for any suggestions....Thanks for your help!

You need your water. Try placing a thin segment of lemon in a glass or bottle. Or try putting a little 100% fruit juice into your water. "Tuff it out" right now, or you'll be back in the hospital for dehydration, the most common cause of RNY readmissions to the hospital. DAVE

Had the same problem (and still do to some extent). The first couple of weeks I lived on Sugar Free Popcicles, Fuze Slenderize, chicken broth (low fat, low sodium), and of course the protein drinks. I could get those down but I couldn't handle just plain water. I also used some of the Crystal Light Hydration formula. They are lighter than the normal and I could handle those better than the regular Crystal light (too strong at the beginning).

Hang in there -- It does get better.

Yep, you are experiencing post-surgery taste bud dysmorphia.  LOL.  I hate plain water and believe it or not most bottled and city water has a good deal of sodium in it.  The first thing I had at the hospital was Crystal Lite lemonade.  Yuk!  Tasted like Gatorade to me and I always hated that stuff because of the saltiness.  I have and continue to use Walmart's Great Value brand knock-off of Crystal Lite.  The early orange sunrise flavor is my favorite but they have lots and lots of flavors to choose from and it's really economical too.  Don't forget SF popsicles count as a fluid also.  They were a lifesaver my first couple of weeks and continue to be.  When I eat a popsicle I just don't feel as full as I do with normal fluids.  Weird but true.

Only thing I could drink the first year without pain was decaf tea with splenda.

Water can be very difficult. Sounds like you are into ketosis which leaves a horrible metallic taste in your mouth that truly affects the taste of water.  For me, finding Smar****er was a salvation. They have (or at least did 6 years ago) have "fruit essence flavors of a very nice water. No real fruit or juice, and no sweeteners of anykind, but a clean, fresh taste.  Iknow unflavored Smar****er is still available, and I still buy it often, but I just don't see the fruit essence flavors anymore. But maybe I'm just not looking!

The other trick I have and use excessively, still, is to mix a little unsweetened tart cherry juice concentrate with my water.  Just enough to add some flavor, which could certainly vary by person. It's hard to find in some states--I just happen to live in a location that has Montmorency cherries, so it's easy to come by, and it's expensive.  But you don't use much!  You can order it online.  My whole family has gotten into drinking water with a little cherry juice. My young grandkids prefer it over all other water based drinks.

You can also get your fluids from low sodium chicken and beef broth, and if your doc allows it, V8 juice.  I very literally lived on water and broth the first 3 weeks post-op because my pouch tolerated nothing else (sometimes not even that!).

Take care.  Keep at it no matter how awful the taste.  Dehydration is even worse--trust me, been there.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, I am willing to try anything.  This is something I did not even consider would be an obstacle for me.

I will keep you updated...

A lot of people post RNY have problem drinking plain water (me included - and I used to love it).

Flavor it - crystal light, some lemon, some SF syrups, some whatever will help you get the liquid in.

I thought that i hated the taste of water, until I got a brita pitcher and started filtering it. I didnt drink water, only crystal light for 3 months post op.
try filtered water with half crystal light. You might not want to go full strength on that stuff.
also I pour the filtered water into ice cube molds so that is not yucky tap water meliting in my drink.
Also I had to drink everything cold cold cold at first since everything tasted weird. super cold or super hot (like broth)
and words of encouragement! This is gonna be over soon! Whatever your facing your going to get over it eventually! Just think about how in a few months you will be sitting in your little pants drinking water and loving your lighter body!

I haven't had the surgery yet, but my close friend has and she eats alot of crushed ice. She states it helps with her fluid intake and she likes the small cubes. Sonic restaurant has great crushed ice and they cell it by the bag. Good luck.
