Chicken and rice got stuck last night, and when I say stuck, wow, this is the single worse incident I have ever endured.  My best comparison/ description of the pain would be labor pains in the stomach.  It was horrible.  I was in misery for 2 hours last night.  My abdomen and left side feel like an elephant has marched across it.  I couldn't sleep at all for the pain.

Has anyone else experienced such an issue this far out post op??  Any tricks to share on coping with something that gets "stuck".  I can definately say I will NOT be eating chicken and rice again.

get some papaya enzymes.... they're chewable, all natural and readily available in the vitamin section of almost any store.... they will break down stuck food, relieve bloating and gas, and make a just generally grouchy pouchy feel better.....

I have to say that the papaya enzymes are great. They really have helped me when I get into a similar situation. I am no where near as far out as you so I cannot say whether this was normal or not.

Yes!  I have had that same pain, but it was with salmon.  I was up all night and tried everything including HOT tea to try to get it to go down.  I even tried to vomit it up, but nothing.  After dry heaving for about an hour,  I phoned my surgeon in the middle of the night and he said NO water or tea until it goes through.  He said if I was still in pain after two more hours, to go to ER!  So just about two hours later, FINALLY the pain let up.  It was HORRIBLE pain and I have a pretty good pain tollerance.

Hey Missy!
I'll be 2 years out in June.......can eat "buckets" of certain things........but STILL can't digest rice......along with a handful of other things.  I've decided my pouch has his own set of rules....and they're not written out anywhere....lol.
Best Wishes!

Something like that but not totally....It was a piece of salmon I ate too fast and too late after I got home from work.  I went outside and coughed it up.  It took awhile and definitely not like throwing up.  But coughed it up and I felt better.  I try never to eat late just not eat or eat at work.  It's terrible!   I hope you feel better now.  Take care Patty  You probably learned a valuable lesson for all of us!  Thanks P

Hi Missy,
Let me just say the absolute sickest I have been since surgery was from eating rice.  I wanted to die, I did not know I could throw up so many times.  I have vowed that I will never ever eat another bite of rice again.  I think it is because the rice expands in your pouch and that will make you sick.  I don't believe I was in much pain as you but I was sick for 6 hours after I ate the rice.  I did not eat anything else with the rice, there was no chicken or meat of any sort so pretty sure it was just the rice.
