So I decided that I'm actually going to cook today....I'm cooking a pot of chicken soup and poured in some barley...but of course I used the "old" box (expiration date is 7/07) instead of the one that I specifically went to the store to buy today.....I tried to get it out after I realized what I did but of course I stirred it in and there is NO WAY I can "dig" it out.......did I just ruin the whole soup??? Does anyone know if it'll be OK????

You're probably fine unless you saw something floating on top that looked like bugs or little white worms. Sorry that this sounds so gross but that's what it would like if you had them. If the box/bag was sealed well there should be no problem.

It might just take a little longer to cook - grains don't usually really "expire"

Whole grains can go rancid but I think barley is probably good a LONG time.  I buy it in bulk and I have no idea when I bought it but it always tastes fine.  Soup sounds tasty!
