They are canceling my surgery.

They are canceling my surgery. It was scheduled for Tuesday. I'm a wreck. Yesterday my GI dr called because my iron was low and my sed rate was 90 (should be 20). He said tell the surgeon and see what he says. The surgeon called me and said something like "What was the big deal you knew you were anemic and now I'm getting notes about your anemia and sed rate. Sed rate means nothing to me. Its just a way Drs use to send you to specialist." Now we have to cancel the surgery because we live in a medical legal society and now you have to go thru more test that will show nothing and we have to reschedule." You had an endoscope and colon scope we were all ready and now we have to cancel." I didn't know what to say, I was trying not to cry. I don't know what sed rate is I don't know how important being anemic is. I just passed on to my surgeon what I was told to pass on. I felt like I should have kept my mouth shut. He called my GI and called me back in a completely different tone. They agreed I need to have an upper GI and see a hematologist. He said there was a change we could do it before Tuesday but he didn't think there was time to see a hematologist so the surgery would have to be rescheduled. Its bad enough its being reschuled when I've made plans for a month but to know its being reschelude for CYA purposes......

Hi, Robin, I'm so sorry that this happened and can appreciate how you feel. I can't really offer you any words of encouragement regarding the medical establishment/CYA stuff. But all I can say is that it's better to go in and get yourself declared "cleared" and in completely good health prior to surgery. It's important that you be in absolutely tip-top shape going in and it'll be better for you in the long run. It's not really a cancellation, just a postponement. Once you get medically cleared, keep in close contact with your surgeon so your surgery is rescheduled as soon as possible. Chin up---you'll get there, sweetie!! Best of luck!! (((hugs)))

im sorry you got re-sceduled. but remember its not cancelled its rescheduled. it may be for the best. i know it is disappointing but if something is going on with your health. you dont want to take uneccessary chances. its better to wait and be safe than to go ahead and have something happen that could have been prevented. it will come...try to think of it as a good thing that they caught a potential problem. good luck, carl

When I had my blood work done right before my surgery, they discovered that I was SEVERLY anemic. They were wondering how I was surviving! The surgeon told me to take, like, so many milligrams of Iron a day (Can't remember how much) for the 4 days preceding my surgery, and I had a colonoscopy the day before my RNY to rule out any sort of bleeding or polyps or something. I didn't have anything, so they went ahead with my surgery. I am doing great now! Good Luck to you! Becky RNY 11/4/03 319/250/???

Robin, I am sorry for your set back. I know it is frustrating. Just hang in there. I have had an elevated sed rate in the past and nothing was wrong with me. Good luck and God bless you.

Robin, I am sorry your surgeon talked to you that way. However, as far as CYA, HE should be looking out for YOU. The way he talked to you was really inapropriate. Anemia is nothing to take lightly. I've been told by my Dr, that you can bleed to death from that because your blood has a harder time cloting. Take the time to get healthy, because this surgery is for you to live and not to die on the table or shortly afterwards. It will be ok and you will have your surgery shortly. I know it sucks that you have to wait, but we want you to come out a BIG LOSER!!!!! Hugs and best of luck Hun, Ginger S

Robin, I understand how devastated you are. I, too, was scheduled for a BPD/Duodenal Switch on March 16, and got a call yesterday from my surgeon cancelling it. If you want to know the details, you can e-mail me at [email protected] However, I am taking a few days to "mourn" and re-group. Everyone I have talked to say that this happened for a reason. I don't see that yet. Of course, the medical communities need to be certain, with all the lawsuits going around, and they need to be as sure as possible that you, as their patient, survive. Remember that first and foremost. I have gone thru the colonoscopy, hematologist, etc. so I can sympathize with you. please feel free to e-mail me and i'll be glad to discuss this with you. take care.... Ola
