What is your take on protein bars?

Beef jerky!

I get the Teriyaki kind by Jack-Links (that brand seems to have less fat, carbs and sodium than some of the others)

I always have protein bars around. I like the Pure Protein chewy chocolate chip and the Atkins chocolate chip granola bars. They both have fantastic stats and are great to "grab and go". I have a bad habit of skipping meals when I am rushed - so this prevents me from doing that. I have been eating protein bars since very early out. Not every day, but a few times a week at least. As long as the stats look good - and you're still eating "real food" throughout the day - they're great!!

The South Beach ones w/ 19 grams of protein taste great, but I can't handle the sugar alcohols. Wayyyyyy too high for me. I do like the high protein cereal bars though, with 10 g of protein.

I think many of us unfortunately skip meals when we're hurried. But, i had replied to a previous poster that i'm very careful to get in my real meals. I told her that we get to eat so little that i look forward to meal time when i am able to have actual food....

How many carbs?  My doc says protein bars are expensive candy bars and I'd be better off with real food.  I don't waste my money on them.

I love your Doc's comments on the protein bars. My NUT thinks the same thing--she wants me to eat whole foods and not get caught up in these kinds of "food products".

Pure protein bars are one of the few that have less carbs than protein. Most of these protein bars should be called Carb Bars, IMO.

I am not a big fan of protein bars for the following reasons:

-Too many carbs. Pure Protein bars have 17 g. and that's over 40% of my daily allotment. But most of the rest have more carbs than protein and some have my entire daily allotment of carbs.

-Too many calories. Many of them are 300 calories or more. That's 1/3 of my daily allotment.

-They're a slider food. Which makes them dangerous.

-They are a trigger food because they are like a candy bar. I eat one and the next thing you know, I'm eating one every day.

-They don't taste *that* good

-They are full of artificial ingredients

I still eat them. But very sparingly. Usually only if I get caught short somehow and my other choices are much worse.
