shoulder pain after lap band related to diaphragm?

Pumpkin, I think my reply might have come across less clear than I intended. I am not in an way talking about extreme pain. On the contrary, any extreme pain, anywhere, is cause for concern.

I didn't know that you had shoulder pain but I did know about N.M.. That sort of ongoing pain is clearly a sign something is wrong and I think I remember N.M. posting that her doc just ignored her and so things got worse.

But a mild left shoulder pain is a not uncommon sign of being too full. According to my doc, it is not surprising. After all, the diaphragm is near the top fo the new small stomach area and so pressure after eating just a bit too much is likely.

How are you now? Hope you are feeling much recovered.

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

I'm feeling so much better now, but my recovery is slow.

I've got cabin fever and my house is just killing me. My DH & kids are helping, but they don't exactly clean the same way I do. I'm one of those people who has the cans in my cupboards sorted by size, and perfectly straight rows.
My pots and pans all have specific places, as does all my other kitchen stuff. Now my cupboards all look like they threw up and this is causing me GREAT stress.

Thanks

Our bodies are amazing - irritated nerves in one are can result in referred pain - and diaphragm/left shoulder in a common one.

I had gall bladder surgery 30 years ago and remember that pain - I was positve that I had been dropped while unconscious onto my shoulder, as the pain was so bad.  It did stop as healing progressed.

I had RNY 5 weeks ago - the first week with the Jackson drain caused sharp pain when I took a deep breath, but disappeared when the drain did.

Take care - remember that itis OK to keep letting doctor and staff know of persistence of pain - even after they gave you an answer!!

The surgeon said before the operation that left shoulder pain is common but glad to know its not just me. Hoping it goes quickly though!! Really glad I found this webpage - Thanks - Jo

I just had the lap band on the 17th. How long does the shoulder pain last and what alleviates it?

It lasts just a few months, but it does come back now and then if you eat too fast or too much. I had my surgery 1-1/2 years ago and I still get it.....but just occasionally. It is a good reminder not to eat too much. My doctor said it was something to do with the diaphragm, I believe. Good luck! :)

I've had left shoulder pain since June 19,2006. Now look to your left and see what my surgery date was.

I was sleeved 6 days ago and have had 1 hour of very mild left shoulder pain in the last six days. It will take me some time to heal, but my left shoulder pain is 99 % GONE.

This forum is so wonderful, as it lets you know you're not in the battle alone.  My left shoulder has been killing me.  I'm 3 days VSG post-op and told my husband just this morning that I thought perhaps they had dropped me or something crazy in OR.  I still have my JP drain, so hopefully when it's removed, this pain will cease.  Currently I'm have bowel issues, tons of JP drainage, and this shoulder issue.  Not loving my sleeve...not yet.  But I will.  I know I will.  I'm trying to psych myself into believing that.

This might be TMI, but I had bowel issues, too, and that made the shoulder pain exponentially worse. When I was constipated, the shoulder pain was unbearable. My doctor laughed at me when I told him that, but as I later found out, he was a shmuck. Of course it makes it worse! The bowels are not leaving any room in the abdomen and the diaphragm is going to get irritated.

I really hope you feel better soon. If you had your surgery laparoscopically, that could definitely be the cause of the shoulder pain and it will dissipate soon, hopefully.  When the bowel issues are gone, hopefully the pain will be, too. Good luck to you. Hope things get better really soon.
