Ate cookie...then had heartburn...related?

Hi Everyone,

I broke down for the first time last night and had a cookie (Oreo version).  I only had one but about 15-30 minutes later, I had the worse heartburn.  I use to have that all the time but it went away totally with the surgery.  This was the first time I have experienced it since the surgery.  Do you think it was the cookie?  If so, was it the sugar or could it had been a case of dumping?  I had heartburn and was burping constantly for almost an hour.  I was finally able to get some relief with a small glass of milk.

Btw, don't flame me for eating the cookie...I know all too well it was the wrong thing.  However, I am still human and will make mistakes along the way.

Thanks for any advice,
Wendy

Hi Wendy,

I'm one who if I eat anything choclate, regular or sugar free, after say 6pm it sits for awhile and then I'm up 1/2 the night with awful heartburn...
Before surgery I didn't have this issue so I'm thinking that these things sit for a while in that little pouch and then causes the stomach acid to bubble up...
I now won't touch anything chocolate after 2pm...that seems to work for me.

It is very much so the cookie!

This you might not know, I found this out when I was really
good friends with a Vegan.   A Vegan eats nothing that IS or
CAME FROM an animal, so for instance no honey, milk, cheese, etc.

We had some oreos at work, and I was sharing them with
everyone, and he said, no thanks im a vegan.
Which stopped me in my tracks... but its a cookie I said.  he said
I know if you had a hydrox i would say yes.

Curious right?

I asked what the difference is.

Besides the OBVIOUS taste difference, which IS the difference.
Everyone knows oreos taste soooo much better

BUT WHY?
Oreos use animal fat to make the cookie.
Hydrox does not.  I am by no means saying eat hydrox.

What I am saying is that, your body is having problems with
the animal fat in the cookie.

Hope this helps!
Goodluck

I do agree it was the cookie---but your "vegan" point is in error.

Oreo cookies do NOT have animal products in them at all.

AT one time Oreos did have lard in them, but they dropped that ingredient more than 5 years ago.

Ingredients: SUGAR, ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE {VITAMIN B1}, RIBOFLAVIN {VITAMIN B2}, FOLIC ACID), HIGH OLEIC CANOLA OIL AND/OR PALM OIL AND/OR CANOLA OIL, AND/OR SOYBEAN OIL, COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, LEAVENING (BAKING SODA AND/OR CALCIUM PHOSPHATE), CORNSTARCH, SALT, SOY LECITHIN (EMULSIFIER), VANILLIN - AN ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, CHOCOLATE

Taken straight from the Nabisco Website

Well then i was still correct.
Because the conversation happened about six years ago.
^_^

But I am mistaken in current oreos.

I don't think it has to do with animal fat unless the OP has problems with eating meat to begin with.

My personal experience for what its worth (and it is likely not much) is that I can eat sugar with not much problem - I can eat fat with not much problem....BUT combine them and I am SICK.  Icecream - out of the question sugar and fat in the proper portions to make me retreat to the bathroom to dump for sometime and I'm 7 years out -

I would simply say that an oreo made me sick, I won't eat oreos any more and leave it at that.

I can't eat any of the high protein bars from south beach or atkins... they do the same thing to me. Even one bite.  The 100 calorie packs with fake oreos or fake chips ahoy are fine, though. Don't ask me how I know this...  ;)

LOL I totally think it's nothing more than a sugar thing.  There are soooooooo many people that suffer from hb when eating sugar...people that have had WLS and not.
Oh and I'll be the first to say that having one frigging cookie (heck even if you had *gasp* two) is ok and if anyone flames you for that frankly they're an asshole.  Everything in moderation.

Thank you all so much for your help and advice!  I had a feeling it was the cookie b/c I haven't had this problem until last night.  However, one would think that a single cookie cldn't do that but I am realizing that ALL the rules change after gbp surgery!

Blessings to all,
Wendy
