Hello I hope someone didnt already post this and I missed it- but I am 6 months out and thinking about what to eat on Turkey day. Thankfully I am not cooking!  I was wondering what tips people have for making good choices that day.

I am thinking of having turkey, deviled eggs, cheese and crackers and asparagus prosciutto boursin cheese wraps- now all this will be from about 11am til 4pm not in one sitting! For dessert my MIL is making a splenda cheesecake for me. I may have a glass of wine at some point.

Things I am planning to avoid: gravy- already got sick from it once, stuffing- my favorite- very sad about this, all the starchy veggies- too heavy and i dont love them anyway, the crescent rolls- again very sad about this! So that's my plan- any advice?

ps sad is a strong word- i am down 100 pound and couldn't  be happier overall!

Congradulations on the 100 lb weight loss !!!  That is FANTASTIC For 6 months post op !!!!   As for the sadness of the stuffing....eat a bite if you want it that bad.   One bite wont hurt you if you can stop at that.   I have NEVER deprived myself of anything that I truely wanted badly.   One bite won't put lots of weight on you.    Sounds like you have a plan and to me that is what makes getting through a holiday successful.    If food for you is NOT going to be available...then make your own for yourself and take it.    You could even take some to share with others.    Make yourself feel special because YOU ARE !!!!    Good luck to you....I know you will be fine because you have a plan and will stick to it.   Congrads again !!!

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

I'm sorry you can't tolerate gravy, because that's the only way I got through my first Thanksgiving dinner. I had a small piece of dark meat turkey completely drowned in gravy, a bite of stuffing, and some green beans. I made no-sugar cranberry sauce and applesauce too.

I also made a no-sugar pumpkin pudding. It's just a box of no-sugar butterscotch pudding mix, a can of pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling - just pumpkin), a can of evaporated milk, and some pumpkin pie spice. So good! Sometimes I top it with some crushed pecans.

Good luck!

Hey, we had our surgeries around the same time. I'm not doing good at eating much. I gag on occasion. Have you had any problems with that?

I've lost almost 30 pounds, and I had my surgery on October 21st. I feel good about that.

Isn't it weird eating to live, instead of living to eat? Food really doesn't interest me much anymore.

hey buckeye.. my surgery was october 22.. day after you :)  Congratulations on your new life style.  I don't gag at all, but get terrible indigestion no matter what i eat or drink and no matter how small the size of the food is.   I can't eat much of anything and find myself sometimes missing food.. ( mainly when I think about thanksgiving, and when I watch others eat what I used to enjoy immensly.)
It is definately wierd as you say to "eat to live" instead of "living to eat"!
I have lost 28 lbs.. ( and that is with clothes on..lol)

where did you have your surgery?

Laura,
I'm sorry to hear about the indigestion. It gets frustrating, doesn't it?

My husband and I went to LaRosa's last night. I had two bites of salad, and two bites of mushroom/olive pizza. I was stuffed. Before surgery, I would have eaten probably half of a large pizza, the whole salad, and maybe an appetizer.  Haha....it's quite the adjustment.

Congrats on the weight loss! It's a great feeling, isn't it?!

I had my surgery in Dayton, Ohio at Miami Valley Hospital. I was really pleased with the care I received. I still have some bandages on, but the incisions have seemed to heal pretty good.

Have you taken a bath yet? Do you know when that is allowed?

Keep in touch!

Congrats on your weight loss - keep up the good work!

I'm cooking everything I normally do, but adding some stuff. I'm doing a cottage cheese salad, green salad, SF cheesecake dessert and making the green bean casserole differently so I can have some. Luckily I can have gravy (have you tried it since it made you sick - you might have a different reaction to it now), so I plan on having that with turkey and the salads and beans. Then SF cheesecake for dessert.

Stick with your list, eat protein first, eat slowly and enjoy the conversation and your family/friends. This is your first major holiday since surgery, so be gentle on yourself and take it easy.

I am only 4 months out but I AM cooking dinner for my whole family!  Luckily my family actually likes healthier made foods than I did pre surgery.  I usually made all the cassoroles and they would eat it but my daughter said to me that she just wants plain vegetables.  This is her first year at college and she is ready for just good ole plain food!  So I am having, Turkey and dressing, gravy, ham, rolls, black eyed peas, cabbage, 5 cup salad, pink stuff(cottage cheese salad), English peas, mashed potatoes(daughter's request) candied yams(hubby's request - he needs to put on some weight) sugar free chocolate sin (dad is diebetic and it is great for me) cranberry sauce, Cheesecake (hubby's favorite again).  I'm expecting about 20-25 folks!  A bite for me here and there is great!  I'm just thrilled that everyone is coming home!  Heck, I am considering making a big ole strawberry cake for my favorite uncle even.
