Not getting enough calories...
I am a little over three months out from RNY and trying to concentrate on getting my protein in. The problem I'm having is I don't think I'm getting enough calories. I probably average 500-600 per day. My doctor has not given me an amount but I'm worried that my body is in "starvation mode." I only lost about 5 pounds last month total and nothing the last two weeks. Has anyone out there been given a calorie amount? Any suggestions of how to up the calories while getting the protein in? Thanks so much for your help.
My surgeon's guideline was no more than 1000 a day while losing. I found that starting my day with a protein shake, which I still do, helped me to get my body moving and give a jump start on my protein goals. I also kept a journal of everything I put in my mouth, whi*****luded the calorie count, protein count and fluid ounces, to make sure I was meeting all goals...
I was told to worry more about getting the fluids (at least 64oz) and protein (60-80grams) in a day, and not worry too much about calories. That didn't mean I could go crazy eating "junk" food, I just ate what my nuts recommendation was at the time (fish & chicken for the first 6 months) and only ate the portions they recommended.
My nuts diet was 400-600 calories a day until you lost 75% of excess weight. I'm a year out and down 135lbs (80% lost), so I think what you are getting in should be fine.
When in doubt, ask your doctor what he recommends.
