Multivitamin Info -- Detailed info on Flintstones, Optisource, and Centrum EDITED
This was very informative and I agree with pretty much all of it. But ofcourse someone has to play devils advocate and ask if flinstones (my daughter takes them...I take the adult type) are just for kids and should only be used for newly post ops then why is their a dosage on the bottle for adults? And what if you take other vitamins with the flinstones, like calcium in addition to those yummy prehistoric shapped vits?
*please note these are not coming from me. These are questions I have heard asked on here and other places. I figured that someone on here would ask the same things.*

I agree....that is pretty scary. I really did find this very informative. Most people just take their surgeon as the word of God and never question them and are NEVER proactive in their care. I hope that some people read this and realize that the only person who can be their advocate for their health is THEM!
Like I just posted on R&R....Would we give our Children an Adult Vitamin & Mineral supplement, would we give our infant/child adult OTC medication or Nyquil? Then Why isn't there a one size fits all Vitamin made?
Did we take Childrens vitamins preop? and now more than ever w/ absorption issues would we short change our health.

I give my kids adult vitamins. My daughter takes calcium citrate just like me because she doesn't drink milk. I don't get her a special children's version because calcium citrate is calcium citrate.
As for Children's Tylenol, it's the EXACT SAME medicine as Adult Tylenol. The only difference is that Children's Tylenol allows you to give a smaller dose more easily. But adults can take it just fine if they feel like choking down a large enough dose and children can take the adult stuff if you work it out with your doctor what an appropriate dosage size would be for their weight.
This is true for most medicines that come in adult and children's versions, but not all.
This is why I say RTFL (Read the F*king Label). Andrea did. (Go, Andrea!) As you can see, the evil Flinestones Complete that so many rag on here on OH came out around the same as the Centrum, which people recommend instead.
Which is why so many surgeons recommend you take one or the other, but at double the adult dose.

Oh wait, you said Nyquil, not Tylenol. Sorry.
Anyway, I'd have to check if they are the same meds or not. But my point is the same... what matters are the ingredients, not the name on the bottle.

Your body can only absorb so much at one time the optisource is for one tablet. I take 4 per day, I will probably add in some iron to my supplements but right now I just don't see what makes you the vitamin expert? Are you a nutritionist did you spend 4 years at the University dedicating your time to learning about this or are you just basing this on a study that you have read? I trust my nutritionist with my health and I meet patients every support group that I go to that are years out and doing awesome with their weight and their labs. Anyway that's just my POV and I know that you disagree because you post this atleast 2-3 times per day.
What are my qualifications?
Sure, let's go through them.
I am a stay-at-home mom, that spends at least 2 hours every day studying post-bariatric nutrition for my own health and noone else's. Litterally, 2 hours a day studying.
I am a college graduate who can and does actually read information and can make an informed opinion based from scientific data rather than a mouthpiece of whatever surgical practice rearranged my guts.
I am a four year post-op patient who followed advice from her surgical team for several years, and who has suffered from deficiencies in b-12, iron, ferritin, calcium, and D. And hey, those are just the ones I know about. When I got said deficiencies, I decided to learn how my body works, why it was lacking, and become my own best advocate.
And what makes you think my info is so terribly wrong?
And btw -- this is my first discussion about multivites today.. or hell, in awhile. Usually I focus on calcium, which you also don't agree with. If you are going to try and diss me, please be accurate in your accusations.
I tell you what.. why don't you block me. I'm not going to stop talking about vitamin supplementation until OH kicks my ass off these boards just to make you happier. I never once tell people to listen to me -- I present information based off research and tell people to do the same thing. If you want to be a lemming to your surgical practice, go for it. It's a great country in which you can destroy your own health and noone will stop you. Free will is a great thing.
But intelligence overriding emotional attachment is even greater.
Have a great evening.

Wow, I don't think Andrea said she is an expert but by golly neither are you.......I think you are missing the point here, Andrea has BTDT and is 4+ years post-op.
Post-ops are not being properly educated by their medical teams, we see it every day and have lived it too. Unless people are willing to research, read the newest studies on post-op nutrition, vitamins and minerals then they are asking for trouble.
But, really WE know nothing....let's see who is crying down the road because of deficiencies.
