As I stated earlier I'm new to this web site and waiting for the Lap Band surgery approval.  So I decided to surf  tabs and links.  WHY IN THE WORLD DID I CLICK ON "MEMORIAL".  Dummy, my fault, I'll never go there again.

Actually, it's a sign of intelligence.

Mortality IS an issue with WLS. People die. People have complications. People have things happen that change their lives forever and not just for the better. An educated WLser gets all the facts, not just the ones that make them happy-- so they can make an intelligent and informed choice.

I did that and thought the same thing---why would I do that.  It is so sad but a lot of the ones who die do not follow the docs advice.

You are not alone.  I, too, am guilty of browsing at the Memorial Page before surgery.  Yes, death does happen during weight loss surgery (as it does with any other type of surgery.)  It's perfectly normal to have some hesitation and nervousness about taking such a huge step.  But remember, you are doing it to get healthy!  And even though death does occur, your chances are pretty slim!  Good luck!

I did the same thing but quickly realized that death is part of the general population.  Many there died of causes not related to WLS.  Cancer, car accidents, suicide and some died while waiting to get approved for surgery so from being MO.  Of course some did die from complications from surgery/bloodclots etc but it's the risk we choose to take.  Karianne

While you're looking at extremes, you might as well see what life is like for post ops who may not be realizing what they once dreamed about, their struggles and compromises with post-op living.

I agree with Pennisweet......too many do not follow the rules or, their health has suffered irreversible damage from obesity.

It is really the best you can do for yourself.....read anything and everything about the good, bad and ugly of wls.....it makes you better prepared.  The bad is definately one he** of a motivator to follow the rules and guidelines given to you by your surgeon and nut.

Many of the people listed there did not die from their weight loss surgery. Or complications of it.
On the other hand, several who did, aren;t listed. Still, when you are morbidly obese and unwell, any surgery is a risk.
For myself, my life was unbearable, and not worth living as I was before surgery. I am 3 yrs out, and very pleased with life in general!
