DO NOT READ IF YOUR EASILY OFFENDED... CUSS WORDS USED!

I'm really getting so sick and tired of hearing people telling me that im taking the easy way out and that "I just need to get off my fat ass and excercise.."

Everyone you talk to knows someone who died from it, regrets having it done, or gains the weight back. Honestly.. I dont care anymore.. I dont care who you know that had it done and whatever happened to them. I have researched this long enough (4 years) and I have known TONS AND TONS of more people that have made it through loss the weight, and dont regret a minute of it! Im so tired of negativity. Everyone has a story.. I dont care about your ******g story...!!

This is not taking the easy way out. If it was so easy to just diet and excercise and actually lose the weight AND keep it off, then everyone in the world would be healthy and small. But it isnt that way. And I dont think its the easy way out at all. The people that actually think its easy are the ignorant ones who dont know anything about this surgery. They dont know that you have to change your whole lifestyle to be successful and use this as a tool. They dont know that those people who have gained their weight back, didnt take care of themselves and watch what they ate, and went back to their old ways. They dont know that you still have to excercise, count your calories and make sure your getting enough proteins and vitamins..

Thanks for letting me vent. Im really annoyed and frustrated. I have 3 weeks till surgery and I dont need to be hearing all of these negative things RIGHT NOW! I have done my research I know the complications and the chance of death, but people dont need to keep reminding me! PEople say im too young to be having this surgery... So what do you want me to wait till im 40 and 100 lbs more heavier?!? So I can still waste my life away waiting for this to happen **** NO!

Do you think you took the easy way out? Has it really been easy for you? Let me know....

Hi!

I feel your frustrations!  My surgery date is August 12!!!  WHOOO HOOOO!  I can't wait and like you I researched for about 4 years before making my decision!  You are absolutely right that they don't understand.  Thank goodness for the folks here that give such great support!  It has not been easy for me either, but I must say most of my family and friends are supportive and understanding (even the small ones)! But there are always some ignorant ones out there too.

Stick to your guns and do this for yourself!  Best of luck to you.

Good for you !!  I couldn't have said it better myself !!

I'm 2 appt's closer to meeting with the surgeon...and then the wait for my surgery date...
I'm lucky enough to have some very supportive family and friends though...
And I don't feel that I'm taking the easy way out at all...I know I've got some huge (lifelong) changes that are going to have to be made...but I'm ready...I'm going into this with my eyes wide open...and when all is said and done ~ I know I will have made the right decision !!

The very best to you !!

Actually, yes, I do think I took the easy way out. I had no choice. I couldn't do it the hard way..just diet and exercise. I dieted my way right into obesity and sickness. But I'll be honest, it has never been so easy for me to lose weight in my life...and I'm considered a slow loser.

The harder part was learning how to eat and drink all over again and making healthy changes part of my everyday life. Surgery makes it alot easier to do those things.

Easy? no way.  For me, this was a last resort after having spent thousands of dollars and 40 years of my time trying every freaking thing out there (I went on my first diet at 10)

We have or are letting someone cut into us surgically.  We have to forever watch our protein and nutritional intake.  We have to relearn how to eat or get very sick.  And when the **** hits the fan and we want to eat to dull that emotional pain (isn't that how many of us got here?) , well we can't.  We have given away our crutch for good.  And those days suck as bad as the days we binged and hated ourselves.
This ain't no Teddy bear picnic and I too get frustrated at the people out there that don't know what they are talking about  and try to sound like they do.
I rarely post on the main board, but your post struck a chord with me.  Just ignore them all and do whats right for you.

I know you are frustrated.  I was too when some well intended people were giving me the same story.   Just try to ignore them (I know how difficult it is).  Everyone is different, so tell them that.
There was one guy who gave me a hard time when he found out (not from me), he was heavy, and his comments to me were that i am taking an easy way out.  So I asked him (he has diabetes type II, high blood pressure, breathing problems, etc)   if this is an easy way out, how come he does not go there?  or he prefers to suffer from diabetes, hbp, sleep apnea?  I told him, that I do not have yet these conditions as he has, and I am not planning to get them.  So if he thinks it is the easy way out, and do not do that, I guess he likes to suffer and want everyone feel sorry for him.
That shut him up for good.  He now does not talk to me (fine by me) but my friends telling me that he is researching the WLS now.

Live by example.  And you can always tell them “I am not asking your advice or opinion.  Please keep that to yourself.”.

To one of my friend I asked him: “You know me for 10 years.  Do you think I am smart and don’t you know I do research things before I do them?” his answer was “Yes, you do”.  “So”, I said “what makes you think that I have not done my research and not weight the possibility of negative outcome with the certainty of negative outcome for me if I do nothing?”  that shut him up for good, and since there he is very supportive of my decision.  Lern what to say that will make you feel good about your decision and yourself.  We have enough doubts and fears (I know I had) without anyone needed add to them.

Wishing you best.  Strength in dealing with “simple minded people” and wishing you wonderful support group, friends, who will love you through thin and thick, and before and after WLS.

I say "Thank you for your opinion, it shows you have done no research."  Then I go into all the things I had to do to have the surgery, what I went through in the first 8 weeks, and what I go through everyday with vitamins, supplements, reading labels, counting calories, and exercising.  Oh Yeah, I also relay the extremes of my dumpings and sensativity to sugar.  They usually have a better idea of the whole process when I'm done.  If not I usually send them to speak with my husband who knows a heck of a lot more about the complications of the surgery then I care to know.
Hold tight!!!  Almost time for your re-birth and it's oh so worth the work!!  smileys
Good luck...vent away that's why OH is here.

Way to Girl ,

It's amazing how people react to things that aren't the norm. It's their fear that causes them to belittle others who are courage to stand up for them selves. Just this morning I had an appt with my ne PC at the VA and I told her i was researching WLS. She states that i show try harder because the risks that are involved with WLS. Her she is waying about a buck and a quarter and I'm just shy of 300 and she states she doesn't advocate it but if i have to then go for it. I've was basically retired from the Navy because of my weight. With my Asthma I'm always on steriods so that doesn't help. Then there's high cholestral, Diabetes, Arthistis, sinus infections and so on. Luckly for me I had already talked to my Tricare PCP and he had my referral authorization over to Dr. Jawad's office the same day. I wish I could have had the surgery a few years back when i really took seriously the need to get this weight off. I just found out Tricare approves fairly fast the process.

So no don't be mad just think that they are jealous that you are doing something about it and they aren't

to let you know I just found out a co-worker just died from colon cancer she battled for the 8 yrs
I knew her. That made me even more determined to make my self healthier.

At this time until i get my approval i haven't told anyone because of the way people react to this.

Good luck and Godspeed.

Hi!

When I first had the surgery I was faced with this issue.

I said I had the surgery and the comment was "oh you took the easy way out".

Hmmm, lets think about this, now if someone is on the patch to quit smoking, isn't that the easy way out? If they get type 2 diabetes and use insulin isn't that the easy way out?

How about drug addicts that go to clinics.Isn't that the easy way out.

I said to this person, what you think I should gain, lose, be frustrated, hungry and miserable then you'll cheer me on?

I agree! let's go rip those patches off people, hey smokers, we want to see you writher, cry, bite your nails, and fail! It builds character yup that's it character.

And what is so easy about this surgery? The surgery? Altering your body? You still have to work at it.

Just like the patch.

Easy way out my ass. It must be nice to be perfect like them and be strong and resist all of lifes temptations. I'm sure none of the ones that say that don't have any vices. Ummm well vices that you can see. Fat is so easy to recognize any moron can be a critic.

I wouldn't walk up to someone that needed a nose job and say, "hey my father had a big nose, he got it fixed, it's so cheap these days" , or how about seeing someone with bad acne and they are taking medicine awww man that's the easy way out! Let them go away on their own.

People have no problem addressing someone's weight issue. "hey Diane putting on the pounds huh" hey Uncle Bob I see you still haven't trimmed your nose and ear hair". sheesh

Don't let them get to you. I hate to be mean, and sarcasm is one of my strong suits, but if anyone says that to me again, whatever is going on with them I'm going to comment, I don't care if they are cross eyed, buck toothed, big nosed, yellow teeth, no teeth, false teeth, or hairy ears and nose. They are going down.

It's all fair. You want to play the fat card, well I'm playing my card too.

Peace out

Diane
