Having to prove I'm single...WTH???

So my next surgery is suppose to be in 3 weeks....that is a whole other stressor right now...but anyway...trying to get the ducks in a row...so yesterday I fill out the online request to take money from my 401k to pay for my out-of-pocket medical expenses. And it's so irriating because the request can not be proccessed until they receive a waiver verifying either that my spouse agrees to the withdrawal or that I'm single. WTH? First of all this is MY money, none of it is even the employer contribution, I am only allowed to borrow from my contribution so it's MY money...so if I did have a hubby I'll be d****d if they would have any say over what I do with MY money. But I'm no married...I am SINGLE....so I have to prove it...how? Oh...have someone in HR sign off that I'm single...and exactly how would they know for sure. Now this wasn't a huge surprise as I've borrowed before and had the form signed etc...which annoys me even more than I have to do this again. So I take the form over to HR yesterday and leave it for the lady who needs to sign it. I left my ext. for her to call when it was signed. I left early yesterday and figured I missed the call I would just swing by on my way into work this morning. Well she's in her office with someone but the door was open so when she looks up I just ask quickly if she had the form. Yes, and I'll give you a call once it's signed. Ummm ok...1 page form, no complicated, just sign it already. But honestly it's not her I'm mad at, I'm sure there is a procedure she must do, copy it for records, etc....it's just soooo annoying that I must prove I'm single...I mean I'm creatively thinking in my head "ways" to which I could prove I'm single....lol. ETA....speaking of annoying can someone please figure out who the heck keeps trying to fax something my ext....my phone keeps ringing and ringing and I can't tell them to stop because it's just an incoming FAX.  O.k. this is when my mom would tell me to "settle" down....before I stroke out.

UGH!!! How effing ridiculous! (excuse my language). That would have me boiling as well.  I've also heard that if a woman wants to have her tubes tied, her husband has to sign an approval form. I know it's a little different from your case, and I haven't verified this to make sure it's the truth, but it's the WOMAN'S body! If she doesn't want anymore kids, why should her husband be able to deny her that right to choose???  Anyway, Good luck on getting it signed. And sorry, I don't know anything about faxes, but that must be as equally as frustrating!

Well damn.... I never got asked to sign off approval on my husband's vasectomy.  What if I wanted to use him to have more kids?  BTW...  I am the one who insisted he get snipped in the first place.

My husband couldn't get his vasectomy without my signed approval.  I had to go into his doctor office and sign paperwork.

Sorry to hear you have to go through all this to get your own money.  My bank always does this to me also.  Yes I am married but dang it my paycheck goes in there too.  I have told them that before also.

Anyway can you hit an outside line and then put in your fax number so it goes there and hopefully will print out (like on my phone I can hit 9 to get outside line then hit our fax number and it will go there and print).  You might try it and see if it works for you. Jacque

Actually this is a rule because of people getting divorced. Some people will try to drain the savings and if you take that money out while married the spouse is entitled to half of it unless there is a prenup lol. I feel you though that would be annoying.

Yeah...I hate it when other people's breaking rules or trying to screw people over screws me over...why I can't just show I file my taxes single, etc...who knows...but also if I just filed for divorce...how would my HR rep know??? When my mom had to borrow from hers they asked about my dad signing off on it...of course it made her mad too...but he had passed away...but they told her they needed proof...so she had to take a copy of the dealth certificate!

Sarah: I'm with you and it's my money, I should be able to say what to do with it.  But I guess along the way some husband or wife decided that they were paying all the bills in their house so that their spouse could put away all their money in a retirement (401K) fund for both of their retirements and then there was a divorce.  It is law that if you have someone besides your spouse as the beneficiary on this fund that the spouse has to sign off on it as well as loans, hardship withdraws, etc.  I'm sure this probably came from an unhappy divorce where one thought they would take it all at the end.
