Yikes! As I Lose, My Husband GAINS?!?!

An odd thing has happened! As I have been losing weight, myhusband has started GAINING.  This is a man who was so thin, when we married, that he actually could not float in a swimming pool -- not enough bodyfat! But since my surgery, he has begun gaining at an alarming rate.  He says it could be a) the medication he's on (or one of them) b) I have too much junk food in the house ****rue, there's much less now, obviously) c) I'm undermining him in some way -- after all, what was that remark I made about suddenly weighing LESS than he does, now?!?! I'm veyr, very worried about his health, now.  He snores seriously now, for the first time ever, which is frightening (not just the noise, but the potential for apnea).  And it cannot be good for his health, he's gained about 20-25 pounds in the last six months.  And he has NEVER had a weight problem!!! So, I'm hjere asking for advice.  He's promised to make an appointment to see his doctor, but after that .... any ideas? ETA: I just checked, and he's gained about a pound a week for the last two and a half months, alone.  If he keeps this up, he WILL be obese in six or seven months.

Have any of his medications or his doses been changed during the period of his weight gain? /Steve

No ... he started taking a sleep med all the way back in August, but his weight gain has really revved up RECENTLY. (he does not get up in the middle of the night and sleep eat) I know that weight-gain begets weight gain ... but apparently his appetite has really increased, and he's gaining exponentially. I would like to point out, however, that according to http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/bmi.htm , he is barely overweight, and is still in the 45th percentile of BMI for men his height and age.  He's certainly not obese.  But heaven help us, I worry that at this rate he'll be there soon.

> he started taking a sleep med all the way back in August, > but his weight gain has really revved up RECENTLY. Hmmm, I can't think of any such drug that would cause this, offhand. > (he does not get up in the middle of the night and sleep eat) No, I think you have to be a member of the Ambien horror stories Forum here on OH to have such symptoms.   (Judging by the remarks here, 80% of all women on OH are taking Ambien, and 180% of all of them are eating more in their sleep now that they're post-WLS than they used to eat when awake!) My own SO has lost 20 pounds in the past 9 months since I had my WLS consult.  It's hard not to lose at least a little weight if your partner has had WLS, because of household-wise changes in dining habits, food choices, grocery purchases, etc.  So, I agree that this is worrisome.  /Steve

I've noticed that my husband eats more. And I've figured out why. We're still making the large portions. He feels he needs to eat more so the food doesn't go to waste. He's been losing some since he is my exercise partner. But he definitely eats more now - and it's very concerning. We've been trying to cut back on how much is made. It doesn't help that we live with my Mom and she never eats! Is that a possibility with him?

Wondering if you're feeling normal?? I blog about everything!! Check my page out for more!

I would have considered that possibility, but we have eight kids, and there is competition for every morsel.  There's no "clean plate club," but the kids (especially the teenagers) really do tend to eat everything that's there.  There aren't a lot of leftovers, if ya know what I mean!!! And everything in the house is healthier these days, anyway.  He's saying that he does tend to pick up snacks on his way home (interesting!!!) ...  He had a thyroid virus about three years ago, I'd like the doctor to take a look at that possibility.

Thats funny my husband has done exactly the same thing. I tease him and say it's because I keep saying here eat this. It is starting to not be funny. I have never seen him this heavy in the 33 years we have been married.                                                                                                  Nancy

Ditto ... It never occured to me my husband would be this heavy, and while he's going to be HOTTTT as far as I'm concerned FOREVER, I just know this isn't healthy!!!

Hubby had a virus that caused his thyroid to go into serious overdrive (briely) about four years ago -- He dropped 20 pounds in no time at all, and it just scared the **** outta me. Maybe it's unrelated.  But I'd like to know, before he's on death's door! Husband and I have very different temperaments -- I'm all OMG THE SKY IS FALLING and he's all Oh, wow, stuff from the sky, kewl.  So right now I want him to have a doctor's appointment TOMORROW and demand a slew of LABS with emergency priority for the readings.  And he's all Yeah, maybe I should call someone -- next week. Aaaaaaaaaargh!
