Ambien and night eating

Could Ambien cause me to eat at night and not even remember it? My weight loss has slowed greatly for the past few months, maybe because I'm getting so close to goal.  But a couple of times in the past 2 weeks I've noticed food missing from the fridge that I KNOW was there the day before, and my husband says he didn't eat it (some of it, like SF pudding, he wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole).  Well, the dogs are too short to reach the fridge handle (and have the small problem of no opposable thumbs), so who's eating it?  Must be me, and if that's the case, no wonder my weight loss has slowed.  One day 4 SF pudding cups were missing, which means I ate an extra 240 calories the night before. The only thing I can think of to blame for this is the Ambien I've been taking.  Has anyone else had a similar experience?   Needless to say, I'm not taking any Ambien tonight... Thanks, Jean

Hi Jean, I read about this happening.  I have been on Ambien for years and so far I haven't taken any trips, but it is a scary thought as the article I read said some people actually go out and drive.   Check with your doc, he might have a better suggestion. Jeanne

I've read about and hear on the news that not only are people eating in their sleep, but in some extreme cases, driving in their sleep. There was someone here a year or two ago that the eating thing happened to. If you're using this for sleep maybe you should ask for something else. Holly

I take it oo and have heard of the side effects.  I am a very light sleeper and I think that might be why it doesn't effect me, lol it would prolly wake me up.  On a lighter note... my pug can open doors, and even the sliding back door... so maybe the dogs are being sneaky!  Really I have heard of it so I am sure it is the sleepy meds.  Let us kown how you do without it.

Your pug can open doors?  Yeesh, that's scary.  If my pug could open doors, she'd be out of the house, in my car, and driving to the mall with my credit card in a flash. Jean

LOL Oh that would be my poodle Princess Honey bear... she won't go without clothes if it was her choice.  You have a pug too?  Yes I think I might teach him how to open the fridge with a towel and get a bottle of water out of it.  He is very smart, he body surfs in the pool and then dries himself off.  Crazy dog I'm telling ya!

Speaking as one of those people that used to take Ambien, I did the sleep eating AND sleep walking thing.

So, umm yeah YOU could very well be on of the people that Ambien affects that way.

Ambien is a great sleeping aid.  THAT said, if it is causing you to sleep eat/walk or do other things.  Discuss this with your doctor.  There are other effective medications that can help with insomnia.

Personally, Lunesta and I are best buds.  Ambien was kicked to the curb 11 yrs ago.

I agree with you, the dogs have this problem with pulling the tops off of the pudding.  I know it wasn't my CATS that brought the pudding to bed that night..... waking up to chocolate pudding ALL over me and the sheets was NOT funny....especially when one is single and there was NO man in the bed to share the pudding with..... know what I mean?  ;-)

Good Luck in solving your mystery.... but I think you have some good clues so far.

I have read about the eating amnesia with Ambien.  While it didn't cause that, I started going to the computer and would be found sleeping there!  Scary stuff.  No more ambien for me.  I might add, not much sleep either!
