I agree with the others.  Sizes vary.  I'm reading these sizes of people our height (I am 5'2" too) and feeling envious!  I'm down to 232 and am wearing a 2X and a 22.  Play around with what you've got or get some dollar specials of a variety of sizes.  Nice idea planning!

If the vacation is not for a few months, and you had a recent RNY, I wouldn't buy ANYTHING until closer to the time of vacation. You are going to be losing weight very fast and there just is no way of knowing what size you will be. I started at about that size and about your height and was in about a size 22 at that weight. Within two months I was down to an 16-18 and am now 9 months out and am in a size 4. I would wait and buy things right at the time of your vacation. It would be so discouraging to buy a bunch of things now and then have them be too big for you. Good luck!

It does indeed vary so much!!  When I was that size (at the beginning of my WLS journey) I was wearing a 16/18 bottoms and a 22/24 top.  Most of my weight is around the middle, with a muffin top!  Good Luck.  It will definitely be fun to shop and try on new things!  Have Fun!

I am 5'2" and wear anything between a 18/20 pant to a 22 now. Depends on the material, the design and the manufacturer. For tops, I can wear a XL to a  2X in some.  Of course, I have bought stuff, tags still on, and simply shrunk right out of that size, BEFORE I even had a chance to wear them! My favorite spots are goodwill and the thrift stores right now, that and yard sales. My town has had many people who have had GB and they are like me, clothes with tags attached....saves lots of $$$$$

I'm 5' and 233 now, wearing a 22 and a 3X as of this weekend. I would wait and see how much you lose. It varies so much.

Hi,

I understand that you are excited about getting your wardrobe together for your vacation; however, at this point, you may go down in sizes so fast you might completely miss the mark. I bought some slacks and by the time I went to hem them (about 2 weeks later), they were too big! I also found you can't really go by the sizes. Right now I am wearing some 18s, 16s and 14s.
My tops are mostly large and extra large. I picked up a large yesterday and there is no way I can wear it as it far too small! It really looks bigger than some of the tops I am wearing right now. Right now I have been doing most of my shopping at the Goodwill. I have found some really good buys there on brand new items. Our local Target, Kohls, and several other department store donate the items. They must make more on the tax break than they do selling them to jobbers to sell at places like Marshalls, etc. You might want to start later. Keep in mind that right after the 4th of July they have all those great clearance sales.

Right now, I try on the items that I will "grow into" every week. Sometimes I put them back in the box, sometimes I get to wear them!!!

Good luck on you shopping and have a great vacation!

RNY on 04/30/08 with
I'm 5'2" weigh 242 this morning and put on a pair of 22 pants I could have fastened them but they would have been tight and my belly has not healed yet so I put on strechy pants.  It would be best to wait closer to your trip.  I just recently had a business trip to go on I bought three outfits to wear a couple of sizes smaller just knowing I would be able to lose to get into them.  I was not able to wear them when it came time for my trip.  Waste of money because now I'll have know were to were suits before they will be too big.

Hello! Wow, I am stunned to read about the posters who said they wore a size 14-16 shirt at 5'2 or 5'3 and at 240 lbs.  I was 232 lbs the day of my surgery and am 5'2 and a quarter! Just under 5'3. I am also very, very small framed. I never knew I was small framed until after surgery, but I am. Before my WLS, at my weight of 232 lbs and up at 240ish, I wore a 2x shirt and size 20 or 22 pants. My highest weight (documented) was 268 lbs and I wore a size 24 pants and a 2x to 3x shirt.  I can not imagine being able to wear a 14 or 16 shirt at 240 lbs. Sorry!  I do agree that all body types are different and we all carry wight differently but I was always smaller on top, though I was pretty proportionate all things considered. Obese but proportionate! LOL! I wasn't a pear shape (bigger on bottom); I guess you would have called me an "apple" shape. I was pretty much big all over! LOL!  I think if you buy more expensive plus size clothing, you may be able to get smaller sizes but this is not always the case. I bought my stuff at the women's department at Macy's (not cheap by any means) and I was a solid 2x in shirts at my pre-op weight. I had a lot of stuff from Lane Byrant and again, I was a pretty true to size 2x shirt. I am not trying to contradict anyone here, but I seriously can not imagine being 5'2 or 5'3 and 240 lbs, fitting into a 14!!! Regardless of body type. Sure, maybe if you are 5'5 or taller, but being 5'2? Umm...I just can't imagine it. I had my RNY on 8/11/04, and if I remember correctly (though the exact info is in my profile), I was able to weat a size 14/16 when I got below the 200 mark, maybe 190ish? I should go look at my profile and double check, but I think this rings a bell.... I am now maintaining my weight at a consistent range of 116-120 lbs. I have maintained for about three years. My sizes vary now more than before. I can wear a 2 or 4 pants in misses, but usually wear juniors, as they fit me better as a whole. I wear a size 3 or 5 pants. In shirts I wear a small. Your best bet is to go and try a bunch of stuff on. That is also part of the fun! I agree with the postr who said to wait until vacation is closer to buy clothies. You won't believe how fast the weight drops and the sizes drop, too!!! Wait until vacation is right around the corner, then shop! It is truly amazing how fast the weight drops and the sizes, too.... Good luck!!!! Hugs, Denise

I agree with Denise.  I'm about 5'2".  I wore a 20/22 woman's petite or a 2XP at 240 lbs.  I dropped to an 18 when I hit about 200 lbs.  I didn't wear a size 14 until I was about 160-170 lbs, 16 when I was about 180 lbs.  I carry my weight all over, pretty proportional.  I started with Denise at about 265 and a size 24 woman's petite.

I would suggest a few sundresses for your vacation.  They'll carry you through summer even if you lose a size or two without the baggy butt look like shorts or pants.   Have a great vacation!     Jackie
