2008-02-04 07:52:38 - The Coalition of Fat Rights Activists (COFRA) is calling on the state of Mississippi House of Representatives to withdraw a bill that would discriminate against obese people by restricting their right to dine in restaurants. Mississippi House Bill 282 (HB 282) would prohibit restaurants with more than five seats from serving people determined to be obese. Restaurants that 'repeatedly- feed obese patrons would be subject to fines or closure. 'As a plan to quell the so-called ‘obesity epidemic,' this bill would have substantial and negative side effects on Mississippi's economy and health,- said Paul McAleer, COFRA president 'Anyone who supports human rights and freedoms should be opposing this bill - and any subsequent bills i read this and i couldnt beleive they anothe rreport sais they want to put scales at the doors of mississippi resteraunts and body fat analizers and people calculating your weight before an obese person can walk in to a resteraunt. what happen to freedom they can sell you alcohol and ciggerettes which is legal and killing millions of people every year . thats legal cause they make money off of it. i am so angry . this bill is no different then jim crow laws.  i wouldnt care if i weighed 100 pnds i would never agree to something like this. obese people have no rights. obesity is not considered as a disease. do you no it does not even qulify under americans with dissabilities act. or the discrimination a ct cause the gov. does not recognise obesity as a disease. we need to stand together and put a stop to this.

This was posted on here last month, probably soon after it was proposed, so I hope they are making some progress toward stopping it's passage. What a crock! I want to know who is going to stand in all these restaurants and weigh everyone as they enter the door to see if they qualify to stay and eat. The most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of and a gross violation of human rights. Scary to think that someone that stupid was elected and is sitting in the House of Reps making laws for the state! -Wanda

i can hardly believe what i am reading how are they gonna know who is "obese" and who are they to decide? are they gonna be weighing and measuring people and finding their bmi to see if they can eat in thier restraunt? this is the most obsurd thing i have ever seen maybe they should do chest x-rays on people at convenience stores to determine whether or not they should be allowed to buy cigarettes and then - they could do liver function tests at the liquor store o this is really under my skin! kf

Kim...its so funny I thought the same as you. Are they gonna have a BMI machine at the front door saying yay or nay as to whether you can enter???? This is RIDICULOUS!!!! I think if this goes into effect....they'll be opening themselves up to a LOT of discrimination suits!!!!

i just seen this on the news and i googled it and you would not beleive the stuff that came up. a obese man was hired at mcdonalds he was trying to support his 5 children and they told him they would have to specially order his uniform and after months it never came in and they told him he was to fat and they could not allow him to cook there because they thought it would be to hard for him to stay out of the food. and there are many more people in that same job discrimination boat. but imagine mcdonalds doing this when they are responsible for most of our obese kids in america

Does anyone remember yeasr ago when the restaurant REUBY TUESDAY had a waitress who was overweight and they had uniform changes and they fired her because her bliuse would not button. She sued and was later rehired by them. They showed her picture on the news and she wasnt really that big. discrimination is still very much alive in the USA. whether you may be : Obese any race besides white blind ( less than 20% even have jobs) disabled older citizens religion other than Christian, and then even some Christians are discriminated against because of their moral standards and beliefs. no one can tell me it isnt there because it sure is, just its a hard thing to prove sometimes

i didnt know that about blind people wow my aunt is 61 and has recently moved to tx from illinois if she hadnt "known" someone in the county clerks office she would still be looking for a job she has many certifications and has worked as a legal secretary for years she thought she would have no problems getting a job she was made lots of offers over the phone i guess when they look at your resume the date of birth doesnt really occur to them

but, when you come in sporting some gray hair - then the tables are turned

i was appauled by the number of rejections she got while trying to get a job

ridiculous

I have faced discrimination, and I am white.

Because I am fluent in Spanish but not latina, some places will not hire me.  Apparently, a white girl cannot learn Spanish like a latina can learn English.

We all face discrimination in some way, shape, or form in our lives.

It's not what we're given, it's what we do about it.

Even if I weighed 400 pounds, I would not be upset about Mississippi having idiots in its legislature.  They're entitled to be stupid if they like.  What's more stupid, I'm afraid, is people getting their panties in a wad over something that will never get past the shouting stage.
