Can someone explain to me, what is the difference between IBS and dumping syndrome.  I do not know the difference. I hope that someone out there knows the difference. I would like a simple explanation, because medical terminology does nothing but confuse me.

HI! I got the following definitions of the two off of web md and wikipedia.  The dumping syndrome is what most of us get if we eat the wrong kinds or wrong amounts after surgery.  IBS can happen to anybody but has some similar symptoms.  Hope this helps! Julie.... Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of the intestines. It causes belly pain, cramping or bloating, and diarrhea or constipation. Irritable bowel syndrome is a long-term problem,Doctors do not know exactly what causes irritable bowel syndrome. In IBS, the movement of the digestive tract does not work as it should, but there is no sign of changes in the intestines, such as inflammation or tumors. Doctors think that IBS symptoms are related to problems with the signals sent between the brain and the intestines. This causes problems with the way the muscles of the intestines move.  For some people with IBS, certain foods, stress, hormonal changes, and some antibiotics may trigger pain and other symptoms Dumping syndrome is most common in patients with certain types of stomach surgery, such as a gastrectomy or gastric bypass surgery, that allow the stomach to empty rapidly. Dumping syndrome can also occur as a result of complications after a cholecystectomyGastric dumping syndrome, or rapid gastric emptying, happens when the lower end of the small intestine, the jejunum, fills too quickly with undigested food from the stomach. "Early" dumping begins during or right after a meal. Symptoms of early dumping include nausea, vomiting, bloating, cramping, diarrhea, dizziness and fatigue. "Late" dumping happens 1 to 3 hours after eating. Symptoms of late dumping include weakness, sweating, and dizziness. Many people have both types.

Hi!

This is what I know

Dumping is something that is directly related to the blood sugar level and has to do with food entering into the intestines too fast..raising the Blood sugar level making the pancreas release lots of insulin thinking even more is coming and the result is a low blood sugar episode that causes nausea, cramping, lightheadedness, confusion, the overwhelming need to lay down, sweating, clammy etc.

IBS is a chronic condition some people have and certain foods can trigger an episode of basically loose stools, cramping. etc but this does not affect the blood sugar levels like dumping is caused from.

Dumping can be caused from high sugar high fats

IBS episodes could be triggered by any food that the person does not tolerate but you usually don't get the low blood sugar symptoms like lightheadedness or confusion or sweating..just uncomfortable cramping, diarrhea, and even sometimes the opposite constipation.

I've not dumped yet, so I can't help ou there.  but I can tell you what IBS is like - before surgery, I had a pretty bad case of it - constant diarhea (sp?).  When an episode hit me, I had to go NOW, not in a few minutes, but immediately.  I would got intense pains in my stomach and did not have much notice to find a bathroom.  I would sweat profusely, my heart would race, and I would get naseaus. It was not fun at all.  Since surgery, I have not had a single episode.  Before surgery, some days it would happen like eight times in one day.

Well, I dont eat very many sugary things. I do have episodes of having to run to the bathroom like minutes ago. I do have the stomach cramping, bloating and gas pain.  I have been to the emergency room on two occasions, and they did a CAT scan on both occasions.  I did buy some Gas-x strips that melt on your tongue, and they have helped with the gas problem. I just dont like the idea of not knowing whether it is going to be gas or an emergency bathroom visit. My doctor actually thought that I might have develped a food allergy, and that it might be causing the problem.  I keep my anti-diarrheal medicine, my pepto bismol tablets, my gas-x and my pain medicine on hand.
