My gripe with YOU, which you are conveniently ignoring, is that YOU are trying to tell ME what I experienced with your surgeon. Is that too difficult to grasp?  God forbid I should disturb your hero worship.

Prolly cuz he believes this:

"Some people like the thought of being able to eat more, which is true.  But that leads me to ask, why are you getting the surgery?  Is it to make a positive change in your life?  If so, then shouldn't one be  eating healthier anyway?  To think that one might choose this operation over gastric bypass simply because they can eat more afterward might be the wrong attitude."

And not this:

"In our view, morbid obesity is a metabolic disease that extends beyond uncontrolled appetite and abnormal food intake.  For the past 25 years, our goal has been to change the basic physiology of these patients, allowing for excess weight loss, maintenance of weight loss and continuation of a normal life. We consider that it is important for quality of life to be able to eat normally. We felt that it was preferable not to concentrate our effort on food restriction, giving a false impression that the only problem is a lack of control of food intake, but rather to target correction of the metabolic dysfunction.  In these patients, the difficulty has never been to attain weight loss, but to maintain that weight loss. Morbid obesity should be considered a chronic disease, which requires treatment for life."

Now, lemme ask you.  Which philosophy sounds more "fatty friendly"?

You got it. I got informed that the only reason I wanted the DS was so that I could eat whatever I wanted, without any thought to appropriate nutrition or self control, and still lose weight....If I was ready to truly change my life, then he had all the tools available to me to make it happen, but if I wanted to get "skinny" without making any changes, and risk dying of malnutrition in the process, then I should stay on course with the DS.....and he was NOT the surgeon for me, nor would he recommend any surgeon who does the procedure.  BTW Jill: Go right ahead and see what he has to say about my complaint. By all means, let me know what he says. I'll be happy to add breach of patient confidentiality to my gripes about him.  But I'll give you a little hint: He's never heard of or seen Elizabeth Niederer in consultation. Know why? It's not my real name. So when he tells you he doesn't know a thing about this person, I'm STILL going to say bull**** So how about you cease and desist from trying to tell me what MY experience was with YOUR surgeon, hmmmm? You weren't there and you aren't psychic.  I love my surgeon dearly. He is now my friend, not just my surgeon. But I know that not everyone clicks with him and some people think he's a colossal ass. That is NOT a matter of, "There are always a dissatisfied few in every crowd," you smug ***** That's a matter of  their personal experience.

LeaAnn, this one post is a PERFECT summary of the difference between the RNY and all the restriction-only procedures vs. the DS.  If you put in the citations for both quotes, I think it is worthy of another new post on the main board!

You say he is not in this business for the money? Then I guess he does not charge for his part of the surgery? Or maybe he is one of the cheapest in town and charges just enough to pay his bills and student loans?  Even if it was "free" I woulnd't have let him do a RNY on me

ACK!  Surely he does NOT still do this surgery.  This is the OLD BPD WITHOUT the DS which has mostly been abandoned as a WLS because of VERY high malnutrition and side-effect issues.  It has the pouch issues of the RNY, and the malabsorptive issues of the DS (the WORST of both worlds).  The DS was designed from this surgery to alleviate many of the malnutrition issues associated with the BPD alone.  I would STEER FAR AWAY from any surgeon that is still performing this procedure.

Not to worry, he doesn't do the BPD either. That diagram is just part of his propaganda machine. He really DOES have terrific experience with RNY and has developed an all-encompassing program for his patients. Anybody who walks away from him not knowing exactly what to do or who to call for help is either deaf or has a comprehension problem.
