US vs THEM - Why I chose my surgery...

I had the RNY. I made the choice myself knowing my own body. That is what I suggest everyone do. I am 2 1/2 years out with a 50% weight loss and couldn't be happier with not only the amount but the types of food I can eat. I never was big on sugar anyway and I decided long before surgery that I don't want to push my luck so I don't do sugar. Refined sugar. I eat fruits, drink juices, although still diluted and no concentrates.. I am completely happy with my decision for myself and would never tell someone else what is right for them. I will say that information is key and it is not an easy decision to make. So take your time. If anyone is curious why I ultimately decided for RNY feel free to message me.

You're going with the RNY  right ? So what was it about this thread that reiterated your decision for you ? It is a very interesting thread and I think I'm going to reply to the original posters and see where they are in their journey today & if their views of their surgery choice still stand or if there is any change in their views.

Thanks for bringing this thread up I really enjoyed reading it.

My wife and I both need to change our lifestyle and for moral and ecological reasons, we want to move toward a plant based, whole food diet. I am not self punishing, but any stretch, but I do want to change my eating habits. I want to save on grocery bills and eat smaller amounts.

There are still parts I am not thrilled with, but I can live with it. The surgeons here are a lot more skilled with the RnY, too, so, that kind of made up my mind for me.

After reading a book, my daughter has recently stopped eating meat. I don't know exactly why she made this decision and, I won't allow her to inform me of her " whys" because I don't want to hear about it.

OLD
CORRECTED

RNY - I got the surgery so I'd dump and the fear of that would keep me away from sugar.
DS - I got the surgery so that I wouldn't dump.
DS - What I need is metabolic modification- not a pavlovian revulsion to certain food types. Dumping would would erode my quality of life and reinforce a negative relationship with food.

RNY - I needed the restriction to correct my relationship with food.
DS - I didn't want the restriction because I want to enjoy my relationship with food.
DS - I need restriction combined with malabsorbtion to correct my metabolism and loose weight.

RNY - I wanted/needed to change my eating habits.
DS - I've dieted my whole life -- I want to quit dieting.
DS - I've dieted my whole life and it did nothing to help me, I want to try something different that is proven to work.

RNY - I'm sick of dieting and failing.
DS - I'm sick of dieting and failing.
DS - I'm sick of diets failing ME.

RNY - I want a tool that I can work.
DS - I want a surgery that does the work.
DS - I want to correct my metabolism through surgical means to give myself the best chance at long-lasting weight loss that is maintainable and allows me the best quality of life possible.

RNY - I didn't want to be able to cheat the surgery.
DS - I want to be able to 'cheat' from time to time.
DS - I want to eat normally without having a damaged metabolism keep me in a negative weight-gain loop.

RNY - I want to be healthy.
DS - I want to be healthy.
DS - I want to be healthy and stay that way for the rest of my life, not just during the "honeymoon" period.

RNY - I didn't want someone cutting off my stomach.
DS - I don't want a blind stomach.
DS- I want my pylorus intact to prevent reactive hypoglcemia, in addition to a normal functioning stomach that will allow me a normal diet, less risk of blockage and to continue to take NSAIDS for my health and wellbeing.

RNY - I don't want to have to eat massive amounts of food.
DS - I want to be able to eat what I want.
DS - I want to have a healthy relationship with food, not one based on shame or unhealthy restrictive eating disorders.

RNY - I needed to change my habits.
DS - I've been trying to change my habits my whole life!
DS - I've already changed my eating habits to be "healthy" and it did not work or help me to keep the weight off. Instead of pointless bickering about what I should and should not eat, I want a solution that will WORK.

RNY - I never want to eat sugar or fat again!
DS - I don't want sugar and fat to be 'off-limits'.
DS - I want to have a normal and realistic diet that is sustainable in the long term. I'd like to enjoy a variety of foods in moderation- the way people with normal metabolisms do- without being incapacitated by nausea, pain, sweating, weakness, and diarrhea that can last for hours.

YOU FOLKS ARE FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A CHOICE!
I CANNOT, IT WILL BE MADE FOR ME BY MY SURGEON ON THE TABLE.

When Aetna decides to approve my surgery, My doctor will proceed to do a ds, but I must commit to accept wakening up to having aRNY, 30% chance that he will be unable to complete vsg of the DS due to my Fundy wrap. I learned of the DS from several prominent RNY surgeons who said it couldn't be done and sent me packing to their Professors of surgery, all concur, but Aetna would not allow it. OK rny, but not good surgery for me. I trust my Doctor to do the best for me. I will know when I wake up in recovery if I have a DS or a RNY.
