Hi there! Dr. Lamar was my surgeon too! I actually have to see him this month for my 4 year surgery anniversary.  Anyhow, I used Malt-o-meal in stead of cream of Wheat, like you. I think it's more about staying with the same consistency. I don't know about grits, but I'm sure of you give Pat a call at the office, she'll tell you if it's ok.  Good luck! Jennifer

Actually, I used to joke that Malt-O-Meal is (to be P.C.) "Yankee grits" ..    &:-D)    In reality, grits are made from corn and Malt-O-Meal (and Cream of Wheat) are both made from wheat, that part called "farina" (don't ask me exactly what that is) ..   I've found I can tolerate Malt pretty well, post-op, but grits would sometimes give me a problem ...  Better tolerated than both are quick oats (e.g. Quaker Oats), at least in my case ..

I had that question in our post op nutrition class Tue. My nutritionist said no to grits. I asked if it was because it's made of corn? She said yes. Being from the south that was hard to hear. I didn't really eat grits but every once in while so I was ok with it. Teresa M.

I'm 1 month out today. When I was a week and a half out,my nut. said I could have grits and cream of wheat.
I haven't tried cream of wheat yet, because I'm the only one in my house that will eat it. But grits, have managed to eat without any problem.

Check with your doctor/nut.
It's a great day to be alive.

I was told that grits and cream of wheat were on my diet plan for soft foods but to be careful of the grits.  I tried the instant ones and thought I was going to die.  They swelled and made me miserable for about 2 hours.  I did try them 6 weeks later but tried the kind that you cook and I did better.  I have never had problems with the cream of wheat and it was one of my favorites when my tummy is unsettled.

I had Malt o'Meal without any problems.  I don't like Cream of Wheat so I didn't even try that. Good luck, Saly

I am preop and love my cream of wheat with brown sugar. What do you put in it to tolerate it without the sugar?

I'm 3 weeks out and Malt to Meal is my friend!  I put a splash of milk in it with vanilla and a packet of splenda.  Ymmm

I have found that "Simply Fruit" or sugar free preserves make it taste pretty good.  The funny thing is that i used to pile the sugar in Cream of Wheat, Oatmeal or Coco Wheats!  But I ran out of the Simply Fruit a couple of weeks aga and only had some left over sugar in the house..so, I put about a teaspoon in it - it was too sweet!  So funny.   The simply Fruit has only the sugars of various fruits in it and I love it.
