Someone please yell at me...I'm doing awful!

I was really hoping after I had the surgery that I would be one that wouldn't be able to eat sugar. That's not the case.  I ate two sugar cookies tonight...with sprinkles...I made them with my kids and couldn't resist them.  I won't be baking again for quite a while.  I also had two packages of their fruit snacks.  Low fat granola bars, and doritos today.  Oh, I did have a yogurt.  That was all I ate today. The scale isn't moving because all I eat is carbs and sugar.  I was blaming it on the fact that I have my period...but that's crazy.  Usually I can just say no, I did this surgery for a reason...I'm not going back to the way I was. Have anyone experience the desire to eat like this?  What have you done?  I think I'm going to write down what I'm to eat tomorrow and stick to it.  I'm really struggling here. Now it gets worse...yeah, I know... I got really sick of taking the flintstones vits, so I've been eating the gummie kinds...and eat like 8 of them a day.  I don't take any calcium or d.  I don't like the stuff...I have the chocolate chews...and threw them up, so I tried buying the pills, but they are so large!  I also skipped my last set of appts...whi*****luded having my first set of blood work done.  I'm scheduled to go in later this week and again I cannot find a sitter and I don't know how I"m going to go....but I need to talk about what I'm dealing with here. I feel like I'm failing at this...can anyone help? Thanks, Sarah

Sarah, Do keep in mind…. Before having WLS, if you “screwed up” And ate what you shouldn’t and didn’t get your nutrition, etc.. The result was becoming obese or maintaining obesity. But now? Not just tight fitting clothes to worry about, But Neuropathy, tissue damage, cardiac damage, Osteoporosis, Etc, Etc, etc…. The stakes in this game are Much Higher. Call and reschedule the appt with your doctor- First. Then, clear your house of stuff That triggers your snacking on Carbs and sugar. Get in Protein. Get in your Vitamins, Calcium, etc…. Once you’ve made that step, Then, Look for a counselor to work on coping mechanisms to prevent self-sabotage. Just because you are “Screwing Up,” Right Now, Doesn’t make you a “Screw-up.” That old saying- “You can fall a hundred times and not be a failure, if you get up 100 times?” It’s true. But that sure makes the trip a lot Longer! Get back with the program, and focus on it. The repercussions are far worse Than they ever could have been prior to WLS. Yes? Go for it!  You Can do it. You kinda have to.  Get busy living because the alternative is not an option. Hope to here a string of success stories coming from you in the future! Best Wishes- Dx

You don't need us to yell at you, you are already beating yourself up. It shows by your lack of self care. You need to take care of yourself and that includes eating protein, taking your vitamins and seeing your surgeon for follow up. When I found myself doing self destructive behavoir I eventually sought a psychologist to find out why I did everything in my life for others and wanted people to treat me well but never treated myself well.

I have Lipedema and Lymphedema. I also have a passion for Obesity and Health Insurance Advocacy

Hey Sarah, If you eat scheduled meals loaded with dense protein you won't be apt to snack. I never feel like snacking after I've eaten chicken, fish, beef, etc. it's filling and holds me over to my next meal and then some... also be sure to drink your water. Water is a natural appetite suppressant. Also it helps if you plan ahead. I have to plan a day in advance my menu to be sure I will make the best choices.  Listen it's good that you've recognized early on but you have to make a choice to start doing the right things or you just might fail at this. Tomorrow is a new day! Make your lab work appointment and plan your meals (protein heavy). Here's some things you can do when the snacks are calling.

Sorry to hear you are struggling...time to re-group and make this surgery work for you. Start taking your vitamins and calcium...try different ones until you find some you can tolerate. Step away from the carbs, put down the sugar and focus on making high protein, tasty meals that you can enjoy and feel satisfied...I find that when I don't eat enough solid protein I get hungry, get cravings and want to snack and be generally naughty. Sounds like you are a Mom with little time and energy to focus on yourself..I've been there...I can remember going for a year without a haircut cause I felt like I couldn't spare the time to get to a hair appt. You have to find a way to get to your follow up appt., even if you have to bring the kids with you as a last resort...you don't want to end up sick because of vitamin deficiencies that could be corrected if you're aware of them. I eat well and always take my vitamins and I was low on vit. d at my last appt. and have to take extra. I've found it helpful to make things that are full of protein that can be reheated...I make big pots of chili or beef vegetable soup with lots of meat, I can just microwave a bowl at mealtime and have something tasty that fills me up and meets my protein needs. If I try to get by on yogurt I find that I am hungry all day. Don't be down on yourself, not many people can bake cookies and not eat one...you're not failing...you've identified some problems and now you just need to work towards correcting them. You can do this! Shari

I hear your pain.  I failed at RNY surgery.  I lost 15 lbs at my 1 year check up.  I can eat anything...fat and sugar included.  I got a 2 oz pouch to start with so it grew to a 2 cup pouch which makes sense because a 1 oz pouch grows to 1 cup.  I have gone to my plan B which is on my profile...click on my name.  I eat 6 times a day and because I am finally not hungry I don't eat much junk.  If I do decide to eat junk I use the diabetic food exchanges to work it into my plan.  I kept off 76 lbs before surgery (200 at surgery date) and lost 15 in the first year post op (185), this morning I was 169 down 16 lbs in the past 5 weeks.  I really think I could have followed this diet without surgery.  I hope this helps you.  good luck to you, Linda

One more thought....I didn't lose just eating the protein though.  With my big pouch I can eat a ton of calories from just protein.  Remember those fruits and veges.  Remember a couple of fiberous starches too.  Look at the diets the nuts on this site recommend.  They ALL include healthy foods like fruits and veges and good carbs and fats and milk.  Many healthy people at goal weight eat well balanced diets.  good luck, Linda
