Negative (only) slant on WLS!

I spoke to someone at my insurance company today about prequalification, etc. for WLS and the representative mentioned to me that they had some great information on their website tat would help me in my research... OMG!  It was all negative articles, poems, letters, etc..... people writing how WLS ruined their life, how so many people suffer from malnutrition, etc.   I guess it is their way to turn us off and decide the surgery is useless so that they will not have to pay for it, but I was still a bit shocked about how one sided it was! Thanks for letting me vent!

I have nothing negative to say. I made the lifestyle change, had WLS, lost 130 lbs., and I'm happy I did it. I had no complications and my pouch reminds me often to slow down and chew well. It's a learning process. WLS gave me life. If you want WLS then I suggest you settle in for the fight. Fight 'till you win!!

You ought to collect a bunch of comments pro-surgery, and provide them a copy.  Telling them that you know that they would want to even-handed because you know they would not want to appear to biased against the surgery adn give people the idea that they only care about saving money. My health is better than prior to surgery.  My blood pressure is down.  I have almost no asthma problems now.  I could go on and on.

Hi, That makes me sicker than not chewing enough.  Who writes poems about failed medical procedures?  Clearly they have a nasty little game going there.  I sure hope you weren't dissuaded.  If I were handy with words, I'd write a poem about how marvelous I feel now.  Good luck! Laura

WLS really IS NOT the best thing for everyone---but for those of us for whom it IS the right thing, it's the best thing ever. If you think it *might* the the best thing for you, then YOU need to research ALL forms of WLS, come to understand ALLL the implications of each of them, and make YOUR own decision. Please, DO NOT rely on whatever your PCP, your family, your insurance company, or your friends tell you about WLS. Everyone is different, and everyone has different nees. No one should be making thise decision for you, because YOU are the only on who will have to live with the consequences FOREVER. My WLS has been the very best thing I've ever done. Make yours be the same.

Well phooey on them! That's a not very subtle tactic on their part. Anything to discourage the seeker, eh?

Guess some genius  vice president at the company thought that was a brllliant marketing strategy.  No wonder people hate insurance companies!!   My little lapband (paid for by BCBS) has SAVED BCBS lots of bucks already  the last year and a half. and if I live long enough (and my life expetancy is much greater now than it was pre-band!)  they'll get every bit of their money back and then some.  They had paid for 4 yeart stents and tons of diabeties and blood pressure meds for 20-30 years......now the risk of a heart attack or bypass is gone and I am taking NO MEDS at all.    Pretty good investment for them, I'd say.  (Besides, it's not out of their pocket even tho they act like it is.....we've paid premiums for 40 years to them).   Rant over..........

If they want to provide an information link I think that is great.  However, is should be unbiased.  They could consider the article in the New England Journal of Medicine just last month talking about wls being the only really viable tool for MO.  Of course, you need the information about things that can go wrong.  I wonder how many of the people that have had surgery under that insurance would right really positive letters about their experiences with wls.
