Are carrots hard to digest?

I'm 1.5 years post op and the last few days I have had some difficulties where I get that painful feeling in my throat/chest which feels like a burp that is stuck, then my eyes water, and I end up running to the bathroom to throw up.  I kept throwing up and nothing but clear liquid would come up. The only thing I can think of that I'm eating differently is carrots.   At first I thought I must not have chewed my food thoroughly or that I swallowed too fast.  Then today, it happened again.  I'm afraid to eat now but I'm very hungry. Does this sound like a stricture or does a stricture not allow anything to stay down?  I have had no previous problems since the surgery.  Any thoughts???? Thanks!

A stricture doesn't let anything stay down, it is a closing of the stoma going into the intestines.  Yes, carrots are hard to digest.  I pulverise them when I chew them, till they are mush.  I use to get sick on them too.

Thank you for your response.  Well, I hope it's not a stricture then because I was able to eat after it happened the first time which was Tuesday evening.  I was able to eat later on Tuesday and all day on Wednesday without a problem...and today as well until this evening about 5p.  I didn't have dinner because I was afraid to eat and now I get home and tried to have a little something to eat since I was feelin better and I chewed up my food until it was mush (as you described with your carrots) and it did not stay down.   I'm feeling miserable right now.  I will go to bed and just try again tomorrow. Again, thanks so much for your feedback!

Maybe the carrots would be easier digested in a juicer with apples which is  what i am planning to do when i am 6 months PO.......Wendy                     Minds Are Like Parachutes- They Function Only When Open

baby carrots gave me the worst problems about 5 months out.  I got so sick on them on a trip with my family, I thought I was going to have to go to the ER out of state.   I threw up 6 times and seriously thought I was going to get dehydrated.   What happens, essentially, is the raw carrot pieces stick together like gravel in the bottom of your pouch. (even though I chewed mine up fine).  Liquid may go through, slowly, but nothing else will.  I have had no trouble eating one or two baby carrots, but anything more than that and it is PAINFUL.  Also, I have no problems eating steamed or cooked carrots.  I'm assuming the raw carrots just do not break down in the new pouch as well.  Our new pouch has less digestive acids and cannot break down many foods that we ate before.  A friend who had the lap band says raw carrots make her sick too, so it's not just RNY'ers.

Thank you for your response and your explanation.  It's so nice to relate to people on this site that have all gone through the same things.  I now think it was the carrots and not a stricture.  I was so afraid, like you, I thought I was going to have to go to the ER.  It was baby carrots that I ate.  I didn't think anything of it because I have eaten shredded carrots in salads and I have eaten lettuce which often is a problem for many of us post-op but not for me.  So I didn't give it a second thought.  When it happened on two separate days, I immediately thought the carrots were the only think differently that I had eaten.  In an effort to eat better, I was trying to do more veggies during the day while at work instead of snacking on crackers and unhealthy foods.  I will have to switch to fruits or some other quick and healthy snack because I NEVER want to try baby carrots again!  That was just too painful. It's been two days since I last ate them and I've been able to eat again although I'm eating very slowly and with caution because it was so scary.  I don't want to have that feeling again if I can hel it. Thanks again for your feedback.  It really does help.  Everyone who answers is always so helpful and encouraging and that is very nice.  We are all one big family.
