My friend was told to never drink them either.  One because they are hard on your body and two you can drink your way out of the surgery.  She is 3 years out now and at goal and never gained a pound after goal, 1 1/2 years ago. My Doc talks about protein drinks, but just wants us to be around 70 to 100 a day, not possible with just food for me, but they never pushed it.

I am about 2 1/2 months post op. I was taken off the shakes about 2 weeks ago and I am lost without them. I used the Carnation Instant Breakfast. I am having a great deal of difficulty getting in enough protein. I am NOT a breakfast eater.. never have been and so unless I fix an egg for breakfast, I eat a couple of strawberries for breakfast. I have been craving strawberries for a month now. Of course, I can only eat a couple. I have an appointment next Friday at the surgeons office. I am going to ask if I can still supplement my diet with at least one shake a day..  I also forget to eat because I feel no hunger and I will get busy and not even think about eating!! Boy, is that a big change for me!!! Becca

My dr requires a 2 week liquid diet post-op... then soft foods from 3-6 weeks. He said after 6 weeks I should be able to start getting my protein from food and not drink the shakes any longer. He said it may take some time to learn how to get it all in but eventually not to drink the shakes except for now and then if necessary! hope this helps!
