The way I see it is that we are all just searching for our own path to the same goal - peace, understanding, truth. And there are many different paths - some religious, some philosophical, some completely godless. So try to think of it this way, Linda - whatever path someone chooses (based on his/her life experience and education and exposure), it likely brings them the same peace that your path brings you.
We don't know which path is the right one. We're only human and all we can do is guess. But keep in mind that nobody believes what they do lightly - especially when theirs is an unpopular belief (like atheism) that is otherwise frowned upon. All we can do is choose what is right for us, and that is a very personal and individual thing.
