Topic: finally a surgery date.
I don't post alot on here but I am so happy, I finally got a surgery date, october 09, 2007.  gastric bypass is something that I have wanted since 1996.  I though the day would never come.  Praise the Lord, he knew it would come through. I don't have much support from my family about this surgery but I do have friends that are very supportive. Dr. Stickler is doing my surgery.  Anyway, just wanted to share some good news!!

I went to the initial seminar last December. I have been unable to get anyone to return a phone call since then.  They always say they will pull my file and call me back, but it hasn't happned yet.  I call about every other month. I don't know if I'm just not a candidate for the surgery, not assertive enough or what.  I think I will try to call once more, then give it up.  Apparently, they don't need the business too bad if they can ignore potential candidates!

Hi Everyone!   Don't forget...our meeting room has changed!  (Directions below) The Beckley WLS Support Group meeting will be held on MONDAY, Sept. 17, from 7:00-9:00pm at Raleigh General Hospital on Harper Road, Beckley.   Guests are welcome and everyone is encouraged to attend!  Directions to the new meeting room:  It is a new building behind our old one.  If you go past our current building towards the back of the hospital, you will run right into it.  You will see a wheelchair ramp and some steps leading to two glass doors.  There is a sign that says "Education Center," but it is smaller than the sign on the old building.  It will be fairly obvious once you are there.  There is parking in front of the building and to the rear, so you won't have to park in the main parking lot.  Raleigh General is in the process of tearing down our old building, so this is a permanent changeThis month:  Regular discussion about weight-loss surgery, food, plastic surgery, and anything important to you!   You can view our monthly calendar by visiting our support group website at http://www.geocities.com/beckleywlssg/  The 2007 meeting dates are also listed below. Looking forward to seeing you Monday!   Beth  ------------------------------  2007 Beckley WLS Support Group meeting dates (all Monday meetings):   September 17, 2007 October 15, 2007 November 19, 2007 December 17, 2007    (If Raleigh County Schools are cancelled due to weather the day of our meeting or the following day, the meeting is cancelled also.)  ------------------------------  If you would like to receive an email-reminder for the Beckley WLS Support Group Meeting, please email us at [email protected]

Hi Tammie! Welcome to the boards. I can't offer any help with WV Medicaid - but wanted to make sure you had posted over on the 'insurance' boards. There are a lot of people there who have either had problems getting approved, or have knowledge on how to push through and appeal denials.

Maybe someone will have more info for you there. It's worth a Try!

HI Dan! I know what you mean about it not being that hard to get the board moving, but we've honestly tried several times and just can't seem to get our fellow WVians to post!  It is good to see another person who will post though!  I had my surgery on 8/29/06 in Charleston (Dr. Stickler).  I was 410 pounds and am down to 232 now with about 50 more I'd like to lose.  They are clinging tightly!  I am losing an average of 4 to 6 pounds per month though and have lost 7 this last two months running, so hope to see my goal in about 6 months.  As Panhead said, it is good to see more men on the boards too!  You represent a side of things that us girls just can't address.  When another guy comes looking for support, it it so good for them to find other guys out here posting! Ladybug---As for the preop dieting...   I did not have to lose weight prior to surgery, but I was not allowed to gain even one pound between my consult and my surgery.  SO, I went on a diet with the intent of shrinking my liver to make the surgery easier for my surgeon and my recovery easier on me.  I followed a diet that was primarily a goal of 100 grams of protein per day ABSOLUTE MINIMUM and a maximum of 100 grams of carbs per day.  Other than that, anything was a go.  More than 100 grams of protein and less than 100 grams of carbs every day.  I lost 9 pounds the first week and lost a total of 24 in the 6 weeks between my consult and my actual surgery date.  I was thrilled but also knew that the only reason I was able to stick with that was the knowledge that I was working towards my surgery and that I wouldn't be regaining that 24 pounds plus a few more when I gave up on the diet!  I can honestly tell you that this diet opened my eyes a bit to the very low amount of protein I was consuming as a preop and super morbidly obese person.  I probably ate less than 40 grams per day.  I ate lots of rabbit food though and got plenty of nutrients there.  Finding the foods I had to eat in order to stay below 1000 calories/100 carbs and still get in 100 grams of protein was a BIG education on the best sources of protein!  By the time you ate enough lean meat, etc to get in that 100 grams of protein, you were NOT hungry!  And you had to cut the bad stuff in order to stay within the carbs limit too.  It is much easier than you'd think once you have that surgery approval and date in hand!  And, all that protein helped me heal faster after my surgery! Best wishes to all! Lea
