Here is our creed, if you fit this you are a wls LW and we hope you will join us on the LW forum Here is the link http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/wls_lightweights/ The Lightweight Creed (Created and approved by members of the OH Light-Weights Forum, Jan 2008)

I am a Lightweight. I am only one of many others like me. Together, we are a team. Though our journeys and choices may be different, we are bonded together by the commonality of being Lightweights and the strategies, successes and struggles that entails. It is this bond that defines this board.

I began my journey with a BMI of less than 45 and/or with less than 150 lbs excess weight. My lower BMI and excess weight does in no way make me less deserving of medical intervention, and I should not be made to feel inferior or guilty.

I qualified for WLS because I have co-morbidities, or because my medical history proves that my weight is diet and exercise resistant.

I have worked with my healthcare team to determine the best surgical option for me. I am confident that others have done so as well, so I will refrain from passing judgments.

I will freely share the most accurate information I have, as well as my own personal journey and why I chose my surgery in an informative, educational and respectful way so that others may learn from my experiences.

I respect the decisions of my fellow Lightweights, regardless of the surgery they chose and the nutritional/exercise plans they follow.

I will always promote health and a healthy lifestyle, whether physical or mental; and will respect alternate methods and views toward achieving good health, even if I do not espouse them personally.

I will always be sensitive, honest and respectful when contributing to discussions on this board and in my PMs. I will never flame, demean, invalidate or harass others for their questions or decisions. I will remember, at all times, the difficulties and pain I went through on my own journey and be considerate of others when discussing theirs.

I will always defend and unite with my fellow Lightweights against prejudice and hostility.

I understand it is my responsibility to report offensive conduct to my fellow Lightweights, so that we may deal with offending parties as a united front to preserve the supportive and tolerant atmosphere of our board.

I understand that if my conduct becomes offensive, I will not be welcome to participate on this board any longer.

Topic: Dr. McNatt Formerly at WVU
My wife and i both had RNY in late 2005 with Dr. McNatt.  I have heard that he has left WVU.  Both my wife were very impressed and pleased with him as our physician.  Does anyone know where he went to and why he left? Thanks, Curt

Question: Slider Foods

What are they, I have heard this term used on more than one occasion, does any one know what this term means?    — Nicole Caouette (posted on February 1, 2008)

Post your answer to this question         Post your own question

February 1, 2008 Sliders are any food that desolves very quickly and does not stay in your pouch, ie.. pretzels, yougart.. etc. Have a great day!!!!    — Frank Cartwright

February 1, 2008 Even though yogurt is a slider food, it is a good protein/calcium/healthy snack as opposed to pretzels which are carbs and a really bad habit...I know...I love pretzels and have to watch those! Cottage and any cheeses are slider foods. They make good sides/snacks and with solid proteins. Soups and eggs and are slider foods. Liquids will also wash solid food out of the pouch and the reason to not drink 30 mins before and after meals. The longer the pouch stays full...the better in maintaining your weight forever...Hope that helps.    — .Anita R.

February 1, 2008 Soup and any heave liquid or slippery food is a slider food. Peaches are a slider food too. I don't eat them with anything else as it will push the food out of the pouch and allow you to eat more. I buy canned peaches packed with water and Splenda.    — William (Bill) Wmil

February 2, 2008 This is taken from Kaye Baileys 5DPT website that I used this past week and lost 7 lbs on. I have cut out using soups as a way of eating just for less calories and such. Cut out crackers also. Slider foods slide right through the stoma into the jejunum. My first test of the slider foods was graham crackers and coffee for my after work snack. Now imagine, I could eat a stack of graham crackers and wa**** right through the pouch with the coffee and never feel any satiation. What resulted was an easily absorbed slurry that my jejunum sucked up like a sponge - it didn't have to do any work to absorb this simple carbohydrate slurry. Of course, weight gain resulted and I had to give up this little indulgence. Another popular slider food is pretzels. I speak with post-ops all the time who are addicted to pretzels - again, this is a simple carb that your jejunum is very happy to receive and convert to fat. Traditionally dieters are encouraged to eat pretzels or popcorn - fat free and fiber, right? But that doesn't work so well for us. Giving our re-routed bodies these simple carbs is dangerous because our bodies have spent years perfect the art of fat storage - slider foods are to the body a great big lottery win. By the way, in my example I spoke of a slurry from graham crackers and coffee. Simple carbs, however, will slide right through without the added benefit of a liquid. And several others can talk about cheese nip crackers, popcorn, mashed potatoes, ice cream/yogurt etc.    — Ms Pisces

Topic: RE: Have Some Questions
Hey there, I just read your post and had to chime in.  I had RYN done on April 4, 2007, I am a little over 1 year Post Op and I feel wonderful!  Dr. Shin was my surgeon and let me tell you, I could not have asked for anyone better.  He and his staff are wonderful, professional and very caring, they will do everything they can to help you succeed in your journey.   I have been lucky, I haven't had one single complication (knock on wood) that is not to say that I won't but so far so good.  I have lost 84 pounds, down from 311 to 227, sometimes 225, and it would have been more but I have had a few setbacks with a hysterectomy and hormonal problems, (and the fact that I can eat anything without any problems doesn't help!), but I am not through, I will just have to push myself harder now that my window has passed.  Was it worth it?  OH YES YES YES! I would do it again without a second thought!  I would like to have been further along by now, I wanted to be at least 100 pounds lighter by my 1st anniversary, but I feel blessed to be where I am, and I can do so many more things now than I could before, like bending down to tie my shoes, crossing my legs, wearing a size 18 when I was barely getting in a size 28 at this time last year!  It feels great!  I just got a Total Gym, so with a little hard work, I will get into that size 12! You asked about pain, hmmm, --I am not going to lie to you, it is painful, and some people suffer more than others, my pain on a scale of 1-10 was at most a 7, and the medication they give you is a blessing.  I had problems with my throat because of the tube they put in, it was torn up and I lost my voice for a whole day and a half, one good thing is, my wonderful nurse Kim Phillips at Women & Childrens tracked down a bottle of sugar free throat spray for me, I had no clue they made sugar free, but that made it much better. That is another thing, the staff at the hospital cannot be beat!  The rooms are so comfortable and large, they come in and check on you every little bit, your family is treated well when they are there and they keep you informed on everything that is going on with you.   I don't know about the Medicaid, I am sure that they do take it, I believe they take most insurances and will work hard at getting your approval.  One thing that I would like to say though, you really have to have your diet history in order, I now that my insurance wanted at least 1 year of documented proof of failed diet efforts, the doctor's office will go through all of that with you, but it does take a while to get everything you need together, so the quicker you start on that the better. Thin people just don't understand what it is like to be fat, I mean the toll it takes on your body is nothing compared to what it does to your emotions and self-esteem, which is something that I am still struggling with, even though I have found that I no longer look down at the floor all time, I actually look people in the face.  I know that no matter how hard I worked at it, I would never have lost 84 pounds in a year without the surgery.  My family was worried about me of course, but no-one tried to talk me out of it, they wanted me to be healthy and knew that I was determined to have it done, and knew the risks.  I sure hope this information helps you, I know you want this surgery for the right reason, and I am sure things will work out fine. I have been trying to get gastric bypass for about the same time as you were thinking about it.  I am going to Dr. Shin's seminar on April 17th.  I can not wait!  If you talk to anyone this website they will tell you that they would do it again!  I go in the chatroom and ask questions all the time!  I hope to see you in the near future.  We can go through it together..   You are the only one that can live your life... I know that I want to be healthier and be here for my family and especially my babies..
