Desparately Seeking Bariatric Surgeon

Upon the advice of my primary care physician and my therapist, I am in desperate need of gastric bypass surgery.  The problem is that I am on WV Medicaid and can find no surgeons in my area that accept WV Medicaid.  I live in Charle Town, WV and the only places that I have found in WV are in Huntington and Charleston, which are 5-6 hours away.  Charles Town, WV is a suburb of Washington D.C. and Baltimore, MD ( about an hour away from both!) and I have found hospitals that will accept WV Medicaid, but no surgeons. My weight has ballooned since my tragic knee replacement surgery that got infected that I cannot do physical therapy and my other health issues (sleep apnea, I'm on a CPAP machine; high cholesterol, asthma, etc..) have gotten increasingly worse.  I was 180 pounds and now weigh 330lbs.  I'm 20 pounds shy and 5 years short of when my overweight father had the massive heart attack that killed him. Can someone, please help me?

Hi!  Since you are actually looking for surgeons in MD and DC, let me recommend that you post this same message on the MD and DC boards.  Someone there will probably be able to recommend someone closer to you. The links are: MD  http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/MD/ DC  http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DC/ Hope this helps! Beth

Hi, I'm in nearby Hampshire County--near Romney: Have you tried Winchester Medical Center? They currently have a great bariatric program; however, I don't know if they accept WV Medicaid. Dr. Glembot is one of the surgeon's names. I had my surgery done in Morgantown, WV; however, since last month or so, they do not have the bariatric program due to the fact they have no surgeons. I wanted to go to Winchester before, but they had no program at the time. I went to Fairfax Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and they had a great program. But, my insurance denied anyone outside the state of West Virginia. My heart goes out to you for the health problems you have and the state you are in. First and foremost, for the time being, try to implement some small changes in your diet. No sodas, sweet, sugary drinks or heavy starches.... I drink the Walmart brand of crystal light (different flavors)--constantly. Move your arms watching some country music videos--no leg work required. But, just starting some small steps will help some. Don't give up....that's the main key as well. Keep fighting until you find someone to take your case and ultimately do the surgery, if that's what you want. God bless and I'm thinking about you. Keep me posted... Beth
