Hi There Jane,

Congrats on your up coming surgery!!   I had my surgery 6 months ago and Dr. Wasco was the performing surgeon.  I was knocked out.. so I couldn't tell you if Dr. Georgen was in the operating room or not  but I have also been informed that they both attend the surgeries.

Have no fear, you are in WONDERFUL hands.  Yes.. I heard the same horrible review of Dr. Wasco from a very disgruntled patient.  In fact I know that her posts and emails have been printed and presented to the office in a pending lawsuit against him as her posts and emails are borderline slanderous!  I truly feel bad for what she went through, it does sound like hell, however, as we all know entering into this surgery, there are a LOT of potential complications and not everyone is going to 'breeze' through it.  I wish her well in her continued journey for health and happiness.

As for me, I can not rave about the man enough. The team at Midwest Bariatrics is amazing and they are always there to help you through your struggles, trials, tribulations and happiness. I give them two thumbs up!

Good luck to you!

Dear Ikagram,

Thanks for the insight to the Bariatric Center's way things are. It is nice to hear from someone who has been with the same people.

It sounds like you are a trouper in your life as you raise two kids alone. Raising kids with 2 parents isn't a picnic, let alone by yourself.

I am struggling with losing weight even with the dietician. I guess it is no big surprise since I couldn't do it before either. I am worried that I will be one of the ones denied surgery because I couldn't get my liver to not be fatty. I am also concerned that the dietician will put me on the no list because I didn't lose weight this month. I don't  know if they do that. I'm sure it isn't new not to be losing weight from her either. Did you have to lose a % of weight before the surgeons did the surgery? Did they put you on a liquid diet before and if so how long?

It sounds like you are a medical marvel. Good going on getting off the meds. I am on 9. Sounds like you are way more mobile. I bet that is really freeing. I can hardly wait to feel more free of my pounds.

Thanks so the inspiration.

Dr. Wasco did my surgery but Dr.' G assisted they always do them together from what I am told. Liked Chris who did the life skills class. Did not like the Psych he said I was in CRISIS he has no idea what crisis is until he raises 2 kids by himself that is crisis my life is a lark now. I really like all the staff Dr's nurse starts with a W can be a bit of a snot at times but the others are just wonderful.

I had a revision from an old stomach stapling and when they got inside it was a mess both DR's said they learned something from me.

I had an open RNY and they had to remove part of my stomach but I have had no complications and never regret it for a moment.

When from taking 11 pills and not being able to walk from my front door to the side walk. To 1 pill (bladder control) and walking to work and the Y with my walker.
Only about 6 blocks but still progress is progress.

It took me 60 years to get to where I was before surgery and it has only taken me 4months to get where I am now.

I picked up a black & decker food chopper (approx 1 cup) for around $10 at walmart.  Works great.

Topic: RE: Anyone Had WLS in Stevens Point at Saint Michaels
What kind of surgery are you having?  Lap-Band or gastric bypass?

I had Dr. Selwyn for Lap-Band surgery.  He seems like a very nice surgeon, but I would document everything you both agree on and clarify everything with him.  Heck, if I ever went back to him, I would write down in front of him what we agreed to and have him initial it.  He seems to forget things.

If you type his name in your web browser and hit 'enter', I think you would be impressed with all you find about him.

Call his office at St. Mikes and ask for his nurse Pat or whoever works for him, and ask about attending a meeting with other WLS patients and find out what they all think of him.  I only attended one meeting and saw the results of gastric bypass patients and was very impressed.  There was only one other Lap-Band patient, and unfortunately, I didn't get to speak to her.

I had my band in January of 07 (first Lap-Band patient there), and removed in May of this year.  No ill effects, just no weight loss to speak of (20 pounds).  I also could not keep up with the almost a thousand dollars a month for health insurance.  Once I would turn 65 and be on Medicare, (4 weeks from now), one of his nurses at that time informed me that being they were not a 'Center for Excellence', Medicare would not cover treatment there.  I decided to get rid of the plastic inside of me that was doing no good anyhow.  I decided I had wasted enough time and money making trips to be denied getting band any tighter (had 7 cc's in 10 cc band).  I was very frustrated to say the least.  Now I no longer have to go through any of that - over & done and no more plastic inside me.  I am glad I am done with all of that, but sorry I did not succeed.  I have gained 10 pounds since getting band removed.  Big deal.  I weighed
259 prior to surgery in January of 2007,
241 in March of 2007, and
243 in April of 2008 - prior to removal.
Hardly worth TWO surgeries, was it?!

If you decide to have surgery there, do NOT let any family member or friend leave you alone there without making sure they have the call light within your reach, plugged in, and working!  I was left alone after surgery with the call light not plugged in. Cord was hidden under the head of the mattress!   I had to get myself  into a sitting position (not easy after stomach surgery), get my legs out of the electric stockings,  get out of bed,  bend over to unplug the IV from wall outlet, and drag the IV stand with me in order to go to the bathroom, and then get myself back into bed.  Much later, someone asked me why I didn't use the phone.  Being drugged up and not thinking clearly, all I can remember is I wanted to call home to have someone call the nursing station for me for help, but being it was long distance to call home, I dismissed that -  (still don't know if I could have, but wish I would have tried to get anybody).  I really didn't have a lot of pain after surgery - to get the band put in.

Thank God I was able to go home the same day of surgery to get band out (which was by far more painful), so therefore, my husband stayed with me.  I could never have gotten out of bed alone then, and in fact, took several days before I could get up alone (horribly painful!).

I think the doctor is good.  Please be aware that surgery is on your STOMACH, and not your head.  You will still crave foods you shouldn't eat.  If you can't diet, exercise, and be able to not drink with your meals, then do not have the surgery (Lap-Band that is).  I decided (after surgery) that if I had to do all that, then what good was the band?  Heck, if I were to diet (and not cheat), exercise, and suffer the torture (to me that is) of not taking sips of liquid while eating, I could lose weight - and band had nothing to do with it.

I advise anyone who wants to get the band to understand IT is not going to make you lose weight.  YOU are the only one that can get you to lose weight - by eating less and exercising.  If you can't do that, then forget the band.  Also, I highly suggest you try eating without taking sips of water or any other liquid with meals - before surgery to see if you can do that.  When I try to do that, I become obsessed with wanting to drink fluids.  Maybe the band for you, will serve as a REMINDER that you can not eat as much.  Remember, it takes 20 minutes for the brain to get the message how full the stomach is - therefore, it is very important to eat SLOWLY.   - Sorry this was so long,
 - Mary
p.s.  You have to want the band with a passion and be willing to exercise.  I did not have the passion.

I am considering having surgery in Stevens Point with Dr. Selwyn wondering if anyone has had this surgery with him.  If so were you happy with him, and would you recommend him to someone.

Dear Midwest Bariatric Patients,
Since being on this site I have noticed that Dr. Wasco from Neenah is listed most as the doctor doing the procedures and not Dr. Georgian. Is it just a coincidence or doesn't Dr. G do as many as Dr. W? I am waiting for my insurance approval so have not gotten the final steps to surgery. What is your opinion of how everything went in Neenah? I read one post that was scathing and some that are very satisfied? I sure have been happy with the psychologist that did my evaluation and very happy with the guy running my Bariatric Life Skills group. They both seem top notch and very supportive. They seem genuinely normal. What is your opinion of the other nurses and staff that took care of you during your WLS? Thanks for your imput.
Jane
